Go Green, Pertamina International Shipping Strengthens ESG Position, Ready to Develop Green Shipping Company
Jakarta, November 18, 2021 - Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) as Subholding Integrated Marine Logistics (SH IML) is prioritizing sustainability aspects and strengthening its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) implementation, a global concern including Indonesia along with climate change in the world. PIS also supports ESG implementation by presenting several environmentally friendly ship technologies (Green Shipping).
PIS is committed to sustainable development. PIS presents several environmentally friendly ship technologies (Green Shipping), such as Stern Tube Air Seal Type, to avoid ship fuel leakage, and Oily Water Separator (OWS), to separate water from oil to prevent pollution. It is PIS's contribution in realizing Green Shipping Company, Green Operation, Green Cargo, Green Port, and Green Storage to compete globally and realize the company's vision to become Asia's Leading Shipping Company.
PIS Fleet Director, I Putu Puja Astawa said, "To realize PIS into a Green Shipping Company, the Fleet Directorate is currently participating in the construction of a new Owned Ship. It applies the Eco Ship Design concept, which is useful for reducing exhaust emissions by implementing Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (LSFO) bunker and Scrubber on board which has been applied to two VLCC vessels. Namely, Pertamina Pride and Pertamina Prime and for the next new Shipbuilding project," he said. In addition, PIS also seeks to reduce exhaust emissions for existing ships by reducing bunker consumption through a retrofit program using a boiler to become an electromotor.
The commitment to reduce exhaust emissions is also rolled out by calculating the Energy Efficiency Existing Index (EEXI). A study has been carried out on 31.6% of Owned Vessels, or equivalent to 30 ships out of 95 Managed Vessels. Improvements that can be made include Engine Power Limit (EPL), Eco Steaming, and the use of Low Sulfur bunkers. The target of reducing cargo intensity is at least 40% by 2030 and 70% by 2050. This value is compared to the carbon intensity in 2008.
The company's Green Shipping implementation is also presented by the regeneration of owned vessels that have been carried out. It is following the MARPOL from PERMENHUB 29 of 2014 regarding the Operation of Single Hull Vessels no later than July 1, 2026. It is by compiling a roadmap of 21 "merit" owned vessels, expected to be replaced with new vessels or the purchase of second hand to improve the performance of owned vessels from the operational and financial aspects.
