Yogyakarta, March 25, 2022 – Pertamina's Kampung Gambut Berdikari Program introduced by PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (PT KPI) attracted the delegates of the G20 Environment Deputies Meeting and Climate Sustainability Working Group (EDM-CSWG) exhibition. EDM-CSWG is a global event focused on the environment and climate sustainability that is taking place in Indonesia as part of the G20 international side event. The Pakning River Unit program, assisted by PT KPI in Bengkalis Regency, Riau, is an example of collaborative efforts by multiple parties in addressing climate change, particularly in fire-prone Kampung Gambut. It was presented at the EDM-CSWG session on March 21-23, 2022.
Sigit Reliantoro, General Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Damage of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, explained the Kampung Gambut Berdikari program to delegates who attended the meeting of the Deputy for Environment and the G20 Climate Change Working Group in Yogyakarta (21/3).
Pertamina's Kampung Gambut Berdikari is a community empowerment program integrated with various activities, including the Fire Care Community (MPA) group formation. It is group of residents in charge of fire control in Kampung Gambut. Besides patrolling, the group is also active in educating other people.
MPA members are also given entrepreneurship training through integrated pineapple farming as a productive plantation area. Pineapple agricultural products are not only sold in the form of fresh fruit, which has entered the export market. It is also processed into various food products that are worth selling.
The pineapple plantation developed since 2019 with an area of 10 ha has now grown to 30 hectares. Not only providing economic benefits for the community, but the development of pineapple agro-tourism is also a preventive measure for dealing with peatland fires.
Through this program, various activities continue to be carried out to mitigate Kampung Gambut forest fires. It includes the development of a Kampung Gambut arboretum, citronella, or lemongrass farming and Gambut water conservation.
Sigit Reliantoro proposed this community-based management of Kampung Gambut fires as a model for tackling climate change at COP 26 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Glasgow, United Kingdom, in November 2021.
“The Gambut Arboretum, the Center for Conservation of Endemic Peat Plants, and the preservation of rare Nepenthes species contribute to enhancing carbon absorption through the Kampung Gambut Berdikari Program. This Kampung Gambut forest fire mitigation program also opens up job opportunities for Fire Care Communities to solve community problems on peatlands from the environmental side to welfare,” Sigit Explained.
Commitment to support CSWG and B20 EDM
In addition to Pertamina's Kampung Gambut Berdikari Program, PT KPI introduced the Cilacap Green Refinery program at the EDM CWSG 2022 event. Ifki Sukarya, Corporate Secretary of PT KPI, conveyed that these KPI programs are closely related to supporting the CSWG and B20 EDM goals. "The two programs are aligned with the values carried by EDM CSWG, supporting sustainable recovery, increasing actions to support environmental and climate protection, and mobilizing resources to protect the environment and climate," Ifki Sukarya explained. He hopes that PT KPI's participation in the forum will be useful for introducing PT KPI's initiatives to domestic and foreign stakeholders, aligned with the company's commitment to implementing ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance). The CSWG EDM event was not only attended by delegates from G20 countries but also by other countries, including Spain, the Netherlands, Singapore, Fiji, Belize, Senegal, Rwanda, and the United Arab Emirates.
“ESG as environmental, social and corporate governance has an important role in today's business world. The implementations are also done in collaborative steps. The Kampung Gambut Berdikari Program is an example of efforts to mitigate the impact of Gambut fires, with a community empowerment program that is a solution to the threat of Gambut fires with an environmental conservation approach," Ifki explained.
The Environment Deputies Meeting and Climate Sustainability Working Group (EDM-CSW) at the G20 Indonesia presidency was held in Yogyakarta on 21-23 March 2022. Three issues were discussed. It includes supporting more sustainable recovery, increasing land-based action, and oceans to support environmental protection and climate change control objectives (enhancing land- and sea-based actions to support environmental protection and climate objectives). The third issue is increasing resource mobilization to support environmental protection and climate change control objectives (enhancing resource mobilization to support environmental protection and climate objectives).
The three priority issues and the main missions of the EDM-CSWG will be discussed and formulated into a collective G20 commitment through the adoption of a G20 Ministerial Communiqué of Environment and Climate Change as the main document of the results of the meeting.**
