82% of Hotel Waste Successfully Managed Independently by Patra Jasa

Jakarta, June 16, 2024 - Pertamina's hospitality subsidiary, Patra Jasa, is committed to implementing a waste management program within its managed hotel environments.

Rina Martha, Acting VP of Corporate Secretary of Patra Jasa, stated that this initiative aims to reduce operational waste disposal to landfills over the next five years with a pilot project at Patra Bandung Hotel.

"Patra Bandung Hotel has been chosen by the Bandung City Environmental and Forestry Service (DLHK) as the role model for accelerating zero waste to landfill. As of April 2024, Patra Bandung Hotel has managed 82% of its waste, leaving only 18% as landfill residue from January to April 2024," she explained.

Rina added that the waste management program saw a significant increase in self-managed waste from 2023, reaching 78%, with a total waste production of 27,078 kg.

These achievements were made possible through hotel waste utilization optimization from Patra Jasa's daily activities. The first step involves managing waste sources and separating indoor and outdoor waste into organic and inorganic categories.

Organic waste, such as food leftovers from Patra Jasa’s restaurant and kitchen, is processed using maggot (BSF fly) decomposition methods to produce fertilizer or garden media.

Meanwhile, fruit peels and fruit scraps are converted into fertilizer using Eco enzyme and Mol methods. Outdoor waste is placed in compost bins to be decomposed into compost.

Inorganic waste is sorted into three categories: reuse, recycle, and residue. Recyclable waste is sold to waste collectors, reusable items such as slippers, shampoo, and bath foam are reused after selection, and residual waste is sent to landfills through third parties registered with the Environmental and Sanitation Service (DLHK).

"By staying at Patra Jasa hotels, guests contribute to environmental awareness. This initiative is communicated to hotel guests through banners, such as those in the restaurant displaying daily food waste data and other campaigns around the hotel," she added.

Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), Fadjar Djoko Santoso, emphasized that Pertamina encourages all its group companies to adopt environmentally friendly business practices. He hopes Patra Jasa Hotel's waste management program will serve as a role model for the Indonesian hospitality sector.

"Hopefully, this awareness initiative will contribute to our environmental conservation efforts and become an example for the hospitality industry," Fadjar expressed.**
