Attending COP 29, Pertamina Reaffirms Commitment to Supporting National Energy Transition

Baku, November 11, 2024 – PT Pertamina (Persero) continues demonstrating its active role in supporting the Indonesian government's tangible efforts to achieve Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060. At COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11-12, 2024, Pertamina participated in forums focusing on climate change and energy transition. Through its participation, Pertamina reaffirmed its position as a leading energy company in Indonesia that is committed to sustainability.

The Head of the Indonesian Delegation at COP 29, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, explained that Indonesia emphasizes its commitment to climate change mitigation. It is reflected in a series of programs and projects carried out by the government and SOE to accelerate the NZE target.

“We have great potential for carbon storage and are implementing reforestation programs to restore damaged forests. This is a long-term initiative supported by various parties, including international partners, to create a harmonious relationship between humans and nature,” said Hashim.

Indonesia's efforts cannot be carried out alone. Collaboration among various stakeholders must be continuously strengthened. Minister of Environment of Indonesia, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, highlighted the importance of global cooperation in achieving a sustainable energy transition.

“Through collaboration between countries, sectors, and communities, we can achieve our ambition to tackle climate change. We hope this platform serves as a space for dialogue and concrete action to find sustainable climate solutions,” Faisol said.

Indonesia also has vast forests capable of serving as carbon storage reserves. Cooperation among all parties in preserving these forests is essential to create a better future for the planet.

“Forest protection and cross-sector collaboration are shared responsibilities that we must uphold. With the involvement of all parties, we can ensure the sustainability of Indonesia's natural resources as a legacy for future generations,” Raja Juli Antoni emphasized.

VP of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, explained that Pertamina aims to strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global fight against climate change. It aligns with Pertamina’s clean energy roadmap, which promotes innovative steps toward a more sustainable energy future.

“We aim to be pioneers in the energy transition, making a real contribution to sustainability and serving as a catalyst for Indonesia to achieve a greener energy future. Through various forums and collaborations, we want to show that Indonesia can lead on the global stage in climate change mitigation,” Fadjar said.

One of Pertamina’s initiatives is its commitment to Zero Routine Flaring (ZRF) as a concrete effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In line with the Paris Agreement and Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), ZRF is a key initiative highlighting Pertamina’s tangible contributions to reducing methane emissions and supporting global targets for lowering carbon emissions.

In addition, Pertamina is focusing its initiatives on developing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This effort is part of the circular economy initiative that not only supports sustainability but also addresses regulatory, technological, and financial challenges in producing environmentally friendly aviation fuel.

Methane emission reduction is also a major concern for Pertamina at this conference. As one of the sectors with significant contributions to methane emissions, Pertamina collaborates with stakeholders from several countries and global industry players. By implementing a strategy to reduce emissions by 30% from 2021 levels following the Global Methane Pledge, Pertamina continues to explore opportunities for effective innovations in methane emission mitigation.

“All of these efforts done by Pertamina is to support and achieve the vision and mission of Asta Cita, the Indonesian government’s goals for energy self-sufficiency and a green economy,” Fadjar said.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina’s business lines and operations.**
