Pertamina Encourages National and International Collaboration to Reduce Methane Emissions in Indonesia

Baku, November 14, 2024 – PT Pertamina (Persero) is taking strategic measures to reduce emissions, including minimizing methane emissions across its operational lines. Salyadi Dariah Saputra, Director of Strategy, Portfolio, and Business Development of PT Pertamina (Persero), explained that methane reduction is a key part of Pertamina’s sustainability focus, specifically regarding addressing climate change.

“Pertamina is committed to becoming a leading energy company recognized for its environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and strong governance. We have made significant strides in managing methane emissions to align with our sustainability goals,” Salyadi stated during a panel session at COP 29 on Thursday (14/11/2024).

Pertamina's methane reduction efforts are bolstered through an endorsement letter from the Zero Routine Flaring Initiative (ZRF). The company is committed to achieving zero routine flaring by 2030, targeting a 40% reduction in methane emissions from the 2021 baseline.

Recognizing collaboration’s importance, Pertamina has partnered with key international organizations, including JOGMEC (Japan Oil, Gas, and Metals Corporation) and members of the ASEAN Petroleum Council. Collaborations with USAID and technology providers like Honeywell have enhanced efforts to monitor and reduce methane emissions. Additionally, Pertamina is working with Petronas and PTTEP on the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP2.0) and the Methane Leadership Program. Joint studies with JOGMEC at the Donggi Matindok and JOB Tomori fields focus on precise flaring quantification, reporting, and reduction.

“To achieve meaningful and sustainable results, we must collaborate with governments and the global community,” Salyadi emphasized.

Heather Evans, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Manufacturing of the U.S. Department of Commerce, highlighted the importance of cross-country collaboration and the U.S. commitment to sharing methane reduction technologies.

“We encourage the adoption of emission reduction technologies as industry best practices, not just regulatory requirements. U.S. companies offer innovative solutions for methane emission monitoring, and we are ready to support international partners in their methane reduction journey,” she added.

Yulia Suryanti, Director of Climate Change Mitigation of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of Indonesia, reaffirmed the Indonesian government’s commitment to achieving its enhanced NDC targets by 2030.

“Indonesia has established a carbon pricing policy to support its NDC targets, aiming for a 21.89% reduction by 2030. We balance economic, social, and ecological resilience in our development pathway to ensure harmony between profits, public welfare, and environmental sustainability,” she explained.

Through collaboration, innovative technology, and a shared commitment to common goals, Pertamina and its partners demonstrate the power of collective action in reducing methane emissions and protecting the climate for a sustainable future.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
