Pertamina Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Energy Transition through Zero Routine Flaring Initiative

Baku, November 11, 2024 – PT Pertamina (Persero) declared its commitment to the Zero Routine Flaring (ZRF) Initiative, launched by the World Bank, as part of its efforts to support the sustainable energy transition during the COP 29 event in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Monday (11/11/2024).

Pertamina is the only Indonesian company supporting the ZRF Initiative, a decisive step towards achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060 or even sooner. The ZRF Initiative aims to secure commitments from governments and global oil and gas companies to eliminate routine flaring by 2030, which will be achieved through regulatory adjustments, technological advancements, and financial cooperation.

Representing PT Pertamina (Persero), Zulfi Hadi, President Director of PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE), stated that as a national energy company, Pertamina recognizes the importance of meeting increasing energy demands alongside economic growth while striving to do so in an environmentally friendly manner.

Therefore, to achieve sustainable operations, Pertamina has initiated the ZRF principle. Eliminating routine gas flaring is a crucial step in meeting emission reduction targets.

“Pertamina is honored to officially declare its support for the Zero Routine Flaring Initiative launched by the World Bank. This commitment is a concrete action by Pertamina to reduce emissions and contribute to global efforts to mitigate climate change," Zulfi added.

As part of its national strategy, Pertamina’s commitment also aligns with Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), supporting the global agenda under the Paris Agreement at COP21. Demetrios Papathanasiou, Global Director for the World Bank, applauded this move, recognizing Pertamina as a key partner in Southeast Asia.

“Pertamina is one of the key oil and gas companies in Southeast Asia, producing over one million barrels daily, and it plays a crucial role in Indonesia’s economy. Pertamina’s ambition to develop oil and gas without flaring is truly remarkable,” said Demetrios.

He further mentioned that Pertamina has made extraordinary progress in reducing gas flaring over the past few years.

“We are excited to collaborate with Pertamina on the Global Flaring Reduction Initiative. We hope that in the next couple of years, this partnership will help us jointly achieve the zero-flaring target," Demetrios said.

With strong commitment and support from various parties, Pertamina is poised to be a pioneer in the sustainable energy transition in Indonesia and Southeast Asia and actively contribute to protecting the environment for future generations.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina’s business lines and operations.**
