Jakarta, February 22, 2022 – The collaboration between SOEs and the private sector to accelerate the realization of an integrated electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia, was actualized today. Electrum, a joint venture of Gojek and TBS Energi Utama (TBS), with Pertamina, Gogoro, and Gesits, synergize to accelerate the most complete and integrated electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia. This is also in line with the priority issues delivered by the Government of Indonesia at the G20 Summit, one of which is related to a sustainable energy transition, including accelerating the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem.
Electrum, Pertamina, Gogoro, and Gesits, strengthen their synergies through a shared commitment to continue electric vehicle ecosystem development collaboration. The confirmation of the joint commitment and collaboration was attended by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, Minister of Transportation, Budi Karya Sumadi, Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), Erick Thohir, Minister of Investment/Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Bahlil Lahadalia, and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Arifin Tasrif.
In his speech, President Jokowi appreciated the courage of the companies collaborating today to develop an electric vehicle ecosystem from upstream to downstream. “The government is very serious about getting into new and renewable energy, including towards electric vehicles. Therefore, I appreciate the bravery of companies entering from upstream to downstream and electric vehicle ecosystem developments. We hope that it will be in line with our target in 2030 for carbon emissions to be at 29%, and in 2060 it will enter zero carbon emissions or net-zero carbon."
Marking the confirmation of this commitment and collaboration, Electrum, Pertamina, Gogoro, and Gesits will expand commercial trials of using two-wheeled electric vehicles, which will continue to be developed in stages to thousands of units throughout 2022.
The trial results will be used in several ways, including in Electrum's business plan. The joint company of Gojek and TBS has plans to build electric motor manufacturing, battery packaging technology, battery exchange infrastructure, and financing to own electric vehicles.
This collaboration will utilize the respective expertise of the four companies to encourage electric vehicle infrastructure developments in Indonesia. Electrum will act as an integrator and developer of the electric vehicle ecosystem while taking advantage of Gojek's presence in Indonesia and TBS' expertise in the energy sector. Meanwhile, Pertamina through Pertamina Patra Niaga will provide electric motor battery exchange stations at various petrol stations spread across South Jakarta. Gogoro will support as a provider of innovation in battery and electric motor exchange technology, and Gesits provides electric motors and their infrastructure.
The Form of Sustainability Commitment
Gojek, as part of the GoTo Group, has a "Zero Emissions" commitment to become a carbon-neutral platform and targets its fleet of 100% electric vehicles by 2030. Gojek's commitment follows one of the three G20 priorities this year, energy transition. TBS, which shares the same commitment, plans to transform its business into a green company focusing on developing and investing in renewable energy and clean business.
Pertamina and Gesits’ participation as SOEs in this strategic collaboration will play a significant role. Pertamina, a major player in the energy sector in Indonesia, is committed to supporting the Government's plan to make an energy transition. It is done through the General Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (Battery Charging Stations) and General Electric Vehicle Battery Swapping Stations (Battery Swapping Stations) network expansion. Pertamina will use the results of this commercial test to get the best business model related to the Battery Swapping Station.
Previously, Gojek with Electrum and Pertamina had conducted a commercial trial of the first phase of an electric motorcycle. As a result, the use of electric motors usage can be well received by driver-partners and consumers. On the driver's side, they can save up to 30% in operational costs or reach IDR 500 thousand to IDR 700 thousand in a month. Moreover, driver-partners and consumers also feel that electric motorcycles are more comfortable because they have a smoother and quieter pull compared to oil-fueled motors.
The following quotes are from the speakers regarding the synergy of accelerating the development of electric vehicles:
"In accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles, integrators, developers, and catalysts who are actively building an electric vehicle ecosystem are needed. This is the role that Electrum takes because the electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia has not been well integrated. Through close synergy with SOEs and private sectors, we believe adoption can be accelerated. Not only encouraging utilization, but we at Electrum also ensure that infrastructure is well-available so that people don't hesitate to take advantage of it."
"We think that the focus on electric motorcycles adoption is right for Indonesia, where the use of motorcycles is more than cars. With commercial trials of electric motorcycles by Gojek driver partners, we can get various insights from driver partners and passengers or consumers, such as related to electric vehicle operations, including experience in driving, savings to the ease of replacing batteries as a vehicle resource. We can use this insight to form the basis for Electrum's future business plans."
“Pertamina, a major player in the energy sector in Indonesia, is committed to supporting the government's plan to make an energy transition. It is done through the General Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (Battery Charging Station) and Electric Vehicle Battery Swapping Stations (Battery Swapping Station) networks expansion. Pertamina understands the needs of electric motorcyclists, which are speed and convenience, so we provide a Battery Swapping Station. So, (they can) immediately "Swap and Go". With this business model, Indonesia also has the opportunity to develop an Indonesian standard electric motor battery. So that in the future, the price of electric motorcycles can be more affordable. Pertamina continues to support government programs in accelerating the energy transition in the electric vehicle sector, together with Gojek, Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), Gesits, and Electrum. We will actively develop electric vehicle infrastructure. After building 6 charging station locations, Pertamina, through PT Pertamina Patra Niaga as Subholding Commercial & Trading, has now officially operated 14 units of Battery Swapping Station with 212 batteries spread over 7 Pertamina's Green Energy Station (GES). In the future, we will continue to expand the Battery Swapping Station network in Indonesia.”
“Indonesia has launched a transformation of mobility towards electric-powered vehicles. We at Gesits believe that collaborating with Electrum and other stakeholders can accelerate the actualization of our promise in transitioning to sustainable energy use and build society towards green vehicles and highly efficient power drives.”
“Gogoro is expanding its partnership with Gojek, Electrum, and Pertamina to change the face of urban transportation in Indonesia. This partnership makes it easier for Gojek's driver-partners and the Indonesian people to use sustainable electric vehicles. Gogoro's battery swap technology is a new generation of power source that provides an open platform for two-wheelers to introduce electric vehicles that can be charged quickly, safely and easily."**
