New York, September 29, 2023 – PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) participated in the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) Global Leader Summit 2023 in New York, USA, on Tuesday, (19/9/2023). It follows their success in being among the top six Innovator Teams in the Indonesian SDG Innovation Accelerator for Young Professionals, held in August.
CEO of UNGC, Sanda Ojiambo, stated that UNGC is a concrete United Nations initiative that invites all global companies to align their corporate strategies with UNGC's ten principles in the areas of human rights, labor, the environment, and anti-corruption.
“With the ambition to enhance global initiatives collaborating with business units worldwide following this year's theme, 'Moving Faster, Forward Faster,” she expressed.
Corporate Secretary of PT KPI, Hermansyah Y. Nasroen, explained that PT KPI, as Pertamina’s Refining & Petrochemical Sub-holding, is committed to sustainability in implementing ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement by 2030. "One of our strategies is active participation in global and international organizations, forums, and sustainability initiatives, including the UNGC forum," he stated.
Furthermore, Hermansyah emphasized international forums importance for PT KPI to strengthen ESG implementation, which is a matter of global investor concern, and to expand the network with major global companies, including those in the oil and gas sector who are UNGC members. "Additionally, it aims to improve sustainability reports quality, particularly in the context of the ten UNGC principles, and to promote active participation and cooperation in various sustainability areas on a global scale," he said.
The Desa Energi Berdikari (Independent Energy Village) program, promoted under the theme "Clean Energy for Life" by PT KPI, has been registered as the company's CSR and ESG publications enhancement. This event was attended by 677 innovators from various countries worldwide with 69 innovators hailing from Indonesia, who are members and sub-members of IGCN. "All innovators have undergone a fellowship period and completed the innovation program over nine months. Participants consist of young talents from state-owned enterprises, private companies, and industries involved in sustainability programs," Hermansyah said.
He also mentioned that in the clean energy programs, PT KPI collaborates to provide clean energy through renewable sources to improve lives with economic growth, better education, and more prosperous communities. "We have successfully developed clean energy in remote villages in Cilacap Regency, Central Java, as a pilot project through a Hybrid Energy One Pole Power Plant (PLTH)," Hermansyah explained.
This project began with the Hybrid Energy One Pole (Heop) technology, primarily for electricity needs. "It has now evolved into a Power Plant that combines solar and wind energy for communal use, serving as a solution for residents who previously had difficulty accessing electricity," he added.
The capacity of the Power Plant is 16,200 watts peak (Wp), with 12,000 Wp supplying 78 households and public facilities. "The Power Plant has boosted the economy through residents' creativity in processing pond products, cooperatives, and providing clean and consumable water solutions through a Community-Based Desalination System (Sidesi Mas) with a 240 liters/hour capacity," Hermansyah further explained.
Regarding emissions reduction, the Power Plant has successfully reduced emissions by 126.4 tons of CO2 equivalent per year. "This is also a demonstration of the company's compliance with the Environmental, Social, & Governance (ESG) aspects, supporting energy transition and carbon emissions reduction programs, and aligning with eight of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including No Poverty, Good Health and Well-being, Quality Education, Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Climate Action, and Life on Land," he conveyed.
PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional is currently replicating its Sustainable Clean Energy initiative through the TJSL (Environmental and Social Responsibility) program in other Desa Energi Berdikari in the Kalijaran Village in Central Java, Singapure Village in South Sumatera, and Sorong Village in West Papua.
In addition to the UNGC forum, PT KPI's innovators also had the opportunity to present the Clean Energy for Life: Desa Energi Berdikari program to the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations in New York.
