Committed to Gender Equality, President Director of Pertamina Receives the Asia-Pacific Women Empowerment Principles 2021

Jakarta, November 2, 2021 - PT Pertamina (Persero)'s commitment to increasing the role of women in companies and society has received international recognition. President Director of Pertamina, Nicke Widyawati, had received the 2021 Asia-Pacific Women Empowerment Principles (WEPs) award in the Leadership Commitment category.

Nicke Widyawati, as Pertamina's Chief Executive Officer (CEO), is recognized worldwide for having played an important role in realizing the company's strong commitment to encourage the presence of policies, regulations, or practices aimed at advancing gender equality in the workplace.

Nicke is seen to have proven her commitment as a company leader who has specific roles and responsibilities to promote gender equality in the company environment. It is evidenced by the increasing percentage of women occupying management positions in the company. Through the Pertiwi community (Pertamina's women's worker community), Pertamina has implemented an educational and socialization action program on gender equality.

Nicke also believes in the importance of gender equality for business growth. Through a written Collective Labor Agreement with employees, Pertamina ensures there is no discrimination in career development and HR recruitment, enforces provisions for maternity leave and leave for male workers when their wives give birth. Pertamina also accommodates a balance between the interests of workers' families and work. 

In addition, Pertamina is also active in promoting the role of women both at home and at work, ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of workers, both women, and men. Pertamina also ensures a work environment free from violence, harassment, and sexual exploitation (zero harassment) and encourages awareness of gender equality.

Nicke also continues to encourage the role of women in driving the national economy through small businesses. It is realized through a partnership program by fostering 22 thousand women entrepreneurs of MSMEs. A total of 4,126 women entrepreneurs of whom joined the Pertamina Rumah BUMN. Pertamina has successfully led 672 women entrepreneurs to develop markets at home and abroad.

Through Pertamina's fostered partners, more than 37% have contributed to the national economy, and 9% of those employ people with disabilities. Not only that, but Pertamina has also established Safe Houses for Victims of Violence, training for pregnant women, and established the Sehati program, which is devoted to maternal and child health. Amid the pandemic, Pertamina has also contributed to building a Covid-19 Referral Hospital that provides treatment rooms for pregnant women.

The Asia-Pacific WEPs 2021 assessment goes through a verification process of supporting documents, due diligence, and expert assessment who are professional, competent, and knowledgeable about practices in the private sector that sustainably promote gender equality and women's empowerment.

The award from the Asia-Pacific WEPs 2021 further motivates Pertamina to strengthen its commitment to screen the broadest talent in business companies, improve company competitiveness, fulfill corporate responsibility and sustainability commitments, the corporate model of behavior reflects community expectations for the company, employees, citizens, and families, and promote sustainable development in the countries where it operates.
