Continuing Synergy with USAID, Pertamina Enhances Sustainability Commitment

Jakarta, May 2, 2024 - Pertamina and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through the Sustainable Energy for Indonesia's Advancing Resilience (SINAR) program, signed the 2024 Terms of Reference (ToR) on Monday, April 29, 2024, at the Pertamina Grha Building, Central Jakarta. The signing of this ToR was conducted by Emma Sri Martini, the Director of Finance of PT Pertamina (Persero), and William R. Meade, the Chief of Party of USAID SINAR, witnessed by Brian Dusza, the Director of the Environment Office of USAID Indonesia.

Emma Sri Martini, the Director of Finance of PT Pertamina (Persero), revealed that the signing of the ToR marked the continuation of synergy between Pertamina and USAID, which began in 2022 and has expanded with new programs for 2024. These initiatives include the continuation of the sustainability budget tagging program implementation, enhancement of capabilities and studies related to carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS/CCS) and renewable energy (EBT), methane abatement, support for health, safety, security, and environment (HSSE) commitments, as well as the development of sustainability-related communication strategies for investors. Furthermore, this collaboration also supports pre-audit assessments for Pertamina's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for scopes 1, 2, and 3, the development of a roadmap for implementing IFRS Sustainability, as well as aspects of gender equality, disabilities, and social inclusivity in Pertamina's business processes.

"Pertamina appreciates USAID for this synergy and strategic collaboration in our joint efforts to advance sustainability programs focusing on energy transition and strengthening Pertamina's social development. This third-year collaboration signifies our joint commitment to drive innovation and sustainability in the energy sector, which is an integral part of global efforts to address climate change and accelerate the transition to clean energy. USAID and Pertamina are united in the vision to create a more sustainable future through concrete and measurable steps," Emma said.

USAID and Pertamina hope that this partnership will continue to contribute to achieving sustainable development goals in Indonesia and inspire other sectors to actively participate in preserving the environment for future generations.

Pertamina remains committed to accelerating energy transition and implementing sustainability programs to achieve Indonesia's Net Zero Emissions target by 2060. The company acknowledges the importance of collaboration with various stakeholders, including the government, private sector, and international institutions such as USAID, to address challenges and ensure timely and effective initiatives implementation.

Brian Dusza, the Director of the Environment Office at USAID Indonesia, expressed the U.S. government's keen interest in clean energy development in Indonesia.

"This is a tangible partnership between Pertamina and the United States government in addressing climate change. Various activities highlighted today, such as sustainability budget tagging and strategies for methane emissions handling and reduction, play a role in addressing climate change. I eagerly anticipate this cooperation," he said.

William R. Meade, the Chief of Party of USAID SINAR, stated that several activities have been done with Pertamina in recent years. Gender equality programs are among those that will be implemented.

"We look forward to the implementation of the programs outlined today. Several activities have been carried out in recent years with Pertamina, and there are also new programs. Gender equality programs will be more broadly implemented within the Pertamina Group," he concluded.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
