Indramayu, June 9, 2024 – To commemorate World Environment Day, PT Pertamina Gas (Pertagas), an affiliate of Pertamina's Gas Sub-holding through its business unit Operation West Java Area (OWJA), organized a mangrove planting event at Rembat Beach, Juntinyuat Village, Indramayu Regency on Wednesday (5/6).
Under the "Restore the Mangrove Life of Juntinyuat" theme, Pertagas planted 500 Avicennia mangrove trees, commonly known as "Api-api." These tropical plants thrive in freshwater marshes and highly saline substrates.
The event was attended by representatives from the Forestry Service, Gema Karya Youth Organization, and 105 students from three elementary schools: Juntinyuat 1 Public Elementary School, Juntinyuat 2 Public Elementary School, and Juntinyuat 3 Public Elementary School.
Yedo Kurniawan, Head of External Relations for the East Region, stated, "The Indramayu coastal area is vulnerable to abrasion and extreme waves. Through the mangrove planting program, we aim to mitigate these impacts and preserve the terrestrial ecosystem."
The mangrove planting activity also educated students about environmental care, fostering knowledge and awareness of preserving nature, Yedo added.
Irawan, Head of the Watershed Management Division at the West Java Forestry Service, said, "Thank you to Pertagas for its ongoing commitment to environmental conservation and harmonious collaboration with stakeholders. The benefits of mangrove planting extend beyond preventing abrasion; it also helps curb climate change and boosts marine life populations."
This mangrove planting activity aligns with the company's business management standards that prioritize Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.
Separately, Imam Rismanto, Manager of Communication Relations & CSR, stated, "Climate change mitigation and its countermeasures are a priority in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Pertagas is committed to environmental preservation not only through responsible business operations but also by maintaining ecosystems, such as through the mangrove planting program."
Supporting the 13th pillar (climate action) of the SDGs, Pertagas is dedicated to contributing to climate change improvement, Imam concluded.**
