Follow-Up on the Visit to Tanzania, Pertamina Provides Training for Tanzania Petroleum’s Human Resources

Jakarta, January 15, 2024 - As a follow-up to the visit of the President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Nicke Widyawati, to Tanzania in August 2023, Pertamina and Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) are currently in the process of developing Human Resources (HR) to support sustainable business between the two countries. This initiative is part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two companies.

During the August 2023 visit, Nicke Widyawati accompanied President Joko Widodo to several African countries, including Tanzania, and initiated collaborations in the upstream, midstream, downstream, and geothermal sectors. Specifically with Tanzania, the MOU between Pertamina and TPDC covers upstream and downstream oil and gas exploration and production in the Tanzanian region. This commitment marks the beginning of Pertamina's collaboration in Tanzania for hydrocarbon exploration enhancement and the entire crude oil value chain, as well as exploring potential cooperation in the Tanzanian oil and gas sector, including exploration, production, and gas pipeline development.

Vice President of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, stated that Pertamina, through PT Pertamina Internasional Eksplorasi dan Produksi (PIEP), conducted Pre-Capacity Building and Capacity Building for TPDC employees, in collaboration with Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR) and Pertamina Drilling Services Indonesia (PDSI). In the first batch, five Tanzanian workers received induction for upskilling their HR capacities, which will take place from mid-January to April 2024. In total, 100 participants will undergo upskilling and travel to Indonesia in several batches. In addition to understanding the oil and gas industry, participants will also be introduced to Indonesian culture.

"As part of the MOU, this upskilling is expected to enhance HR capacities to support sustainable business cooperation in the future," said Fadjar.

President Director of PIEP, Jaffee A. Suardin, explained that the Capacity Building Program is intentionally designed for TPDC employees to acquire new skills, especially in exploration and hydrocarbons, to become a world-class energy company.

"The Pre-Capacity Building and Capacity Building agendas are prepared with the fundamental spirit of friendship and bilateral cooperation between the two countries. With these values, we believe that entering into commercial cooperation in the future will be sustainable and provide positive added value for both countries," said Jaffee.

TPDC Exploration Director, Kenneth M. Mutaonga, added that they appreciate the cooperation between Pertamina and TPDC in HR development. "Pertamina has welcomed us and prepared this Capacity Building agenda. I am confident that Pertamina, with its vast organization, serves as an inspiration for TPDC. Capacity Building is a good start to realize the MoU between Pertamina and TPDC," said Kenneth.

Meanwhile, the Director of Africa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dewi J. Meidiwaty, supports the established cooperation. This positive collaboration is an important partnership in building synergy between countries with significant potential in the energy sector, starting with knowledge transfer for HR upskilling.

The Tanzanian Ambassador to Indonesia, Macocha Tembele, also mentioned that this year marks the 60th year of bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Tanzania, which began in 1964.

The Pre-Capacity Building activities were officially opened by the President Director of PIEP, Jaffee A. Suardin, along with the Director of Operations of PDSI, Fata Yunus, the Director of Exploration of TPDC Kenneth M. Mutaonga, and witnessed by the Director of Africa of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Dewi J. Meidiwaty, and the Tanzanian Ambassador to Indonesia, Macocha M. Tembele.

The learning process will involve various methods, including classroom sessions and mentoring. To enhance the implementation process before TPDC employees return to Tanzania, participants will gain direct experience through on-the-job training programs at Pertamina, involving several business units in the PHR Working Area and at the Indonesia Drilling Training Center of PDSI.
