Bali, September 3, 2024 – Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) and Guma have signed a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) to explore the potential for developing gas-to-power in South Africa.
The signing occurred during the international event, the Indonesia Africa Forum (IAF), Nusa Dua, Bali, on Monday (2/9), signed by the Chief Executive Officer of Pertamina NRE, John Anis, and the Executive Chairman of Guma, Robert Gumede, witnessed by the Deputy of Maritime Sovereignty and Energy Coordination of the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment, Jodi Mahardi, and the President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Nicke Widyawati.
This collaboration aims to conduct in-depth studies to develop gas-to-power in South Africa. This initiative is also part of Pertamina NRE's commitment to global expansion, particularly in gas-to-power as an initial medium for energy transition and efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
"I am pleased to be here and witness the collaboration between Pertamina NRE and Guma. I hope this partnership will lead to concrete actions that will positively impact both parties," said Jodi in his remarks.
This partnership is a tangible example of “south-south” cooperation, embodying the spirit of the Indonesia-Africa Forum initiated by the Indonesian government. It began with the state visit of the President of the Republic of Indonesia to Africa in August 2023 to explore potential collaborations between Indonesia and Africa. Subsequently, on November 17, 2023, Pertamina signed its first memorandum of understanding with Guma.
The successful completion and operation of the Jawa-1 Gas Steam Power Plant (PLTGU) by Pertamina NRE is a significant asset, earning the trust of global partners to develop similar technologies. The Jawa-1 PLTGU is currently the largest in Southeast Asia, equipped with the latest combined cycle technology.
"With such extensive experience, particularly the success at Jawa-1, Pertamina NRE is the right partner for Guma in developing a clean energy ecosystem in South Africa. This also marks Pertamina NRE’s journey in supporting the global mission to achieve net-zero emissions," said John Anis.
Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), added that Pertamina encourages its subsidiaries to expand into international markets. Through this expansion, the subsidiaries are expected to impact operations positively and contribute to the company's goal.
"Building partnerships will enhance Pertamina NRE's expertise and experience in the global clean energy industry," explained Fadjar.
As part of the Pertamina Group, Pertamina NRE is committed to promoting clean energy initiatives as part of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) implementations and support for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
