Go Green, Pertamina Upstream Subholding is Ready to Support Indonesia's 2050 Net Zero Emission

Jakarta, November 19, 2021 – Following the Pertamina's Go Green spirit, Pertamina's Upstream Subholding also supports the commitment of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) held in Glasgow, UK (01/11). Pertamina's Upstream Subholding has taken several steps in support of Indonesia's Government to reduce emissions by 29 percent by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

"The steps Pertamina's Upstream Subholding taken to realize zero-emission are through the Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage - Enhanced Gas Recovery (CCUS-EGR) Project program in the Gundih Field and Sukowati Field, energy efficiency in several fields, the use of gas as a source of energy. The Upstream Subholding also replaced diesel engines, and using PLN electricity network to support field operations," said Taufik Adityawarman, Director of Development and Production of PHE, Pertamina's Upstream Subholding, in a separate meeting on Wednesday (17/11).

Upstream Subholding also implements solar power plants usage in collaboration with PT Pertamina Power Indonesia and the application of CCS (Carbon Capture Storage) in addition to CO2 gas producing fields CCUS.

For CCUS implementation, a joint study is currently being carried out to find the potential utilization of CO2 previously ignored to support operations. Since 2016, Pertamina has collaborated with Exxon Mobil Cepu Limited to implement CO2 gas injection into the reservoir layer as part of the CCUS program in the Cepu Block.

"The amount of CO2 gas from the Gundih Central Processing Plant (CPP) that has not been utilized is 15 MMSCFD. The potential for Abatement or waste is 300,000 tCO2 / year or ±3 million tCO2 for ten years. Through CCUS, CO2 gas will be utilized and has the potential to increase gas production up to 36 BSCF Gas & increase condensate production up to 382.7 MSTB," said Taufik.

Meanwhile, the CCUS implementation program in the Sukowati Field has reached the study stage with Lemigas and Japex. Through one of the program steps, we get several benefits. It includes production increase and reducing emissions from CO2 gas.

"We understand that this is a long and continuous process. Therefore, we continue to make various efforts," concluded Taufik.

Pertamina's Upstream Subholding continued efforts in Indonesia's Net Zero Emissions in 2050 are also aimed at reducing emissions from several Working Areas in the Upstream Subholding environment, including energy efficiency programs, reduction of Flare/Zero Flaring and Renewable Energy.

In line with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) implementation, the Upstream Subhiolding also compiled Emission Reduction & Decarbonization road map until 2030. It includes a Road Map of Zero Routine Flaring, Energy efficiency until 2030, and Improvement of the Energy Mix by using Low Carbon Energy or Renewable Energy up to a minimum of 30% of the total energy used discussed and agreed on last Thursday (11/11). It is also an initial effort in mitigating support steps towards Net Zero Emission Indonesia 2050.**
