Hannover, April 24, 2024 - CEO of PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), Yoki Firnandi, outlined several strategies and the company's readiness for decarbonization in Indonesia, including supporting the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) implementation, especially in the carbon storage and transportation sectors.
Yoki disclosed these strategies and initiatives at the international forum Hannover Messe 2024, a renowned industrial exhibition in Germany from April 21 to April 26, 2024.
"Pertamina International Shipping is here to emphasize its focus on Carbon Capture & Storage. So, on this occasion, we are sharing what we will do regarding this matter. What contributions will we make, and how will we collaborate with various parties to conduct studies, pilot projects, and others, including several potential partners," Yoki said.
PIS is one of Indonesia's delegations fortunate enough to be a speaker at the Indonesian pavilion initiated by the Ministry of Industry. The topic discussed is "Decarbonizing Industry Through Carbon Capture and Storage." Present at the pavilion were the Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang, during the inauguration of the Indonesian pavilion, and also the President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Nicke Widyawati.
CCS is a carbon capture and storage technology that aims to aid global carbon emission reduction efforts.
"PIS's role here, among other things, involves the CCS process, which undoubtedly requires a transportation chain to transport carbon and necessitates ships and tanks or storage before being taken to the carbon storage location," he explained.
Regarding the CCS implementation, Yoki further stated that Indonesia has issued Presidential Regulation Number 14 of 2024 regarding the Carbon Capture and Storage Activities Implementation, which also mentions the potential for cross-border programs.
"In this regard, PIS has also gained tremendous trust from the Indonesian government through the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment to become an aggregator of transportation and logistics systems," he added.
With a fleet of ships and port management facilities in Indonesia, PIS believes these facilities can meet the qualifications to support the CCS program implementation, which is currently underway in the Pertamina Group.
PIS has conducted studies on the CCS program that has been running worldwide so far, where the United States and Europe have implemented this scheme earlier. As for the Asian regional area, the nearest market potential is in Singapore, followed by Japan and Korea, which are already preparing for carbon taxes and require carbon storage locations.
"The potential is enormous, so for example, if it is needed from Singapore, there must be ships built specifically to transport CO2 to the injection and carbon storage locations. We need to optimize these potentials and challenges as optimally as possible so that the CCS program can run effectively," Yoki explained.
Similarly, Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), Fadjar Djoko Santoso, stated that Pertamina aims to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2060 or earlier. To support it, the company encourages its subsidiaries to develop various decarbonization initiative programs.
"The results are already evident that throughout 2023, the realization of emissions reductions of scope 1 and 2 by Pertamina has reached 124% of the set target," Fadjar emphasized.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
