Balikpapan, February 16, 2024 - The Balikpapan Refinery development project’s progress has entered a new phase. This National Strategic Project has garnered attention as it will transform the Balikpapan Refinery into the largest processing facility owned by Pertamina in Indonesia. The capacity expansion from 260 Mbsd to 360 Mbsd is accomplished by constructing new refinery units. PT Pertamina International Refinery (KPI) Balikpapan Unit is ready to connect the existing refinery with the new one. It was marked by the Grand Safety Talk event at Gate IV A of the PT KPI Balikpapan Unit Refinery on Friday (16/02).
"A total of 1,516 work items grouped into 180 work packages are ready to be implemented. With 995 high-risk jobs, 13 critical jobs, 876 pieces of equipment prepared, and almost 97% of the materials arrived. Let us guard the dream of revamping to increase this capacity with On Time, On Budget, On Safety, and On Quality," said the Turn Around Manager of PT KPI Balikpapan Unit, Koesoemo Wardoyo, in his report to the General Manager of PT KPI Balikpapan Unit.
The event began with a morning exercise session attended by all participants of the Grand Safety Talk, including management teams, workers, outsourced personnel, working partners, and contractor representatives. The Plant Stop Revamp in 2024 will connect the existing refinery with the new one.
"This National Strategic Project is a mandate given to us to increase refinery processing capacity. PT KPI Unit Balikpapan is taking the initiative to rejuvenate the refinery so that after Start Up, it can run alongside the new refinery," added Koesoemo.
Several operational units of the Balikpapan Refinery are gradually deactivated. The deactivation is part of the Plant Stop Revamp (PSR) or periodic refinery maintenance. This routine refinery maintenance usually takes around a month. With the integration process of the existing refinery with the new one, the implementation will be completed within two months.
At this event, the inauguration of the Pedestrian Crossing Bridge (JPO), Parking Expansion, DCU Center, and DCU Gate IV Building as supporting facilities for PSR was also conducted. The inauguration was carried out by the General Manager of PT KPI RU V Balikpapan, accompanied by the management team.
"We thank all parties who helped support and expedite these supporting facilities. Let us take care of these facilities together. The PSR activities are carried out to maximize operational performance and improve refinery reliability in our commitment to maintaining national energy resilience," said the General Manager of PT KPI Unit Balikpapan, Arafat Bayu Nugroho.
Various types and forms of work will be encountered during the 2024 PSR activities at the Balikpapan Refinery. High-risk jobs such as hot work, heavy equipment operation, work at heights, and work in confined spaces that have the potential to cause accidents and losses will be undertaken.
"Conduct toolbox meetings and safety talks before starting work. Inform workers about the potential hazards they may encounter and convey preventive measures to avoid these hazards. Perform checks on the work area beforehand. Ensure everything is safe before work begins," explained Bayu.
Before concluding the event, PT KPI Unit Balikpapan held a Joint Prayer for PSR 2024 and Donation to Orphans - Dhuafa. Donations were symbolically given to the Pondok Tahfidz of Istiqlal Mosque Balikpapan and Ummi Zahro Orphanage.
Area Manager of Communication, Relations & CSR of PT KPI Balikpapan Unit, Dodi Yapsenang, conveyed that the Joint Prayer for PSR 2024 and Donation to Orphans - Dhuafa is conducted to seek safety from God as religious believers.
"May God be pleased to accompany and protect the implementation of all these activities. We also ask for support from all stakeholders, especially the local community. We apologize if there is any slight inconvenience during the project," concluded Dodi.**
