Implements Operational Excellence, PGE Becomes the Reference for Geothermal Management

Tomohon, December 16, 2021 - PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE)'s competence in carrying out the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) program for the steam field and Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) has attracted the attention of other industry players. One of them is PT Geo Dipa Energi (GDE) which performs benchmarks related to the O&M program in the PGE Lahendong Area which has been carried out with the principle of excellence.

The benchmark carried out by GDE is in line with the improvement program that is being carried out by that geothermal company in developing WKP Patuha 2 and Dieng 2.

General Manager of PGE Lahendong Area, Ahmad Yani, welcomed the arrival of the GDE management team who wanted to absorb PGE's best O&M practices.

Ahmad Yani said the reliability of PGE's O&M program greatly influenced PGE's excellent performance in bringing this company to a better direction and being able to answer the business challenges it faced.

“PGE is very open to outside parties who want to do benchmarks. Hopefully, the results from this benchmark will benefit GDE where we can share best practices, especially currently we are a leading company in facing the challenges of the energy transition in Indonesia," said Ahmad Yani.

On the occasion of the field visit at PLTP Units 5 & 6 PGE Lahendong Tompaso Area led by Fairuz Noor as the Maintenance Manager of PGE Lahendong Area conveyed several things by PGE, such as how the role of PGE's O&M program carried out with the Risk-Based Maintenance method so that it can produce reliable asset maintenance.

Maintenance Manager od GDE Danang Sumalingga said PGE has been a pioneer in geothermal development in Indonesia for more than 35 years, where one of its fields is the Lahendong Area, which has been operating for 20 years with an installed capacity of 120 MW.

“Currently we are making improvements, especially in the organization and O&M program. We see the excellent performance achieved by PGE in the Lahendong Area in North Sulawesi with the character of steam field that is quite complex, but can be managed with a concise but effective and efficient HR/Organization that triggers us to know more deeply," said Danang Sumalingga.

Danang feels that he has received positive results and new insights from these benchmarks. His party has gained new insights on the planning, implementation, and evaluation of PGE's O&M program. According to him, this will be a meaningful input for GDE to be able to make improvements.

Moreover, the development of geothermal energy supply carried out by PGE is a form of support and fulfillment of the commitment to the seventh goal of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), which is to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all (affordable and clean energy).

This is also PGE's commitment that implementing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) aspects in every aspect of running its business.

Currently, Indonesia is ranked second in geothermal development in the world with a total installed capacity of 2,133 MW, and the contribution of the PGE Working Area is 88 percent of the total installed geothermal capacity in Indonesia, which consists of 672 MW which is self-operated and 1,205 MW which is implemented through a Joint Operation Contract.

From the 672 MW operated by PGE itself, it was generated from 6 areas namely Lahendong Area - North Sulawesi with an installed capacity of 120 MW, Kamojang Area - West Java with an installed capacity of 235 MW, Ulubelu Area - Lampung with an installed capacity of 220 MW, Area Karaha – West Java with an installed capacity of 30 MW, Lumut Balai Area – South Sumatra with an installed capacity of 55 MW and Sibayak Area – North Sumatra with an installed capacity of 12 MW.**
