Jakarta, October 14, 2024 – PT Pertamina (Persero) is monitoring the CO2 injection implementation at the Sukowati Field, Bojonegoro, using a 24-hour digital system called the Data Acquisition Realtime Analyzer Command Center (DARA CO.CO). This digital system is capable of monitoring all CO2 injection activities as well as human resources (HR) in the operational area of the Sukowati Oil and Gas Field, Bojonegoro, East Java.
President Director of Pertamina, Nicke Widyawati, personally monitored the CO2 injection process from the digital control room.
"As a state-owned enterprise, we are trusted to make breakthroughs, including implementing new technology. We are proud to be part of the historical use of this technology in achieving energy independence," Nicke explained.
Nicke further stated that the successful CO2 injection demonstrates Pertamina's commitment to applying CCUS (Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage) technology.
"There are two things we can achieve: first, we can reduce carbon emissions, and second, we can increase oil production from Sukowati," said Nicke Widyawati at the Kick Off Field Trial Interwell CO2 Injection event at the Sukowati Field, Bojonegoro, on Monday (14/10).
Nicke added that the CCUS technology application will also create new business opportunities.
"For example, the CO2 we inject today comes from various sectors, such as fertilizer factories and other industries. It reassures us that the energy transition reduces emissions in the upstream oil and gas sector while creating new businesses through CCUS," Nicke added.
Nicke emphasized that these new business opportunities are vast, as Indonesia has the potential to store up to 530 gigatons of CO2 emissions. Indonesia has the potential to become a regional carbon capture hub.
"We will push across all oil and gas blocks in Indonesia to achieve energy independence and net zero emissions by 2060. We thank the government and hope for continued support," Nicke said.
Meanwhile, the Director of Oil and Gas Engineering and Environment of ESDM, Noor Arifin Muhammad, also appreciated Pertamina’s support for the government through the CCUS technology innovation at the Sukowati Field.
"The government is very supportive; the government’s commitment is clear, and this is also a message from the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources that we must maintain lifting and increase oil and gas production," Arifin said.
Deputy Director General of the CCS Project Department of JOGMEC, Hiroshi Okabe, also appreciated the collaboration between JOGMEC and Pertamina.
"We are committed to extending the collaboration in CCUS implementation, which contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We will continue the collaboration in Sukowati with Pertamina," he said.
The General Manager of the Asia Carbon Neutral Business Department of JAPEX, Kyoko Okamoto, expressed pride in working with Pertamina to implement CCUS at Sukowati.
"I believe this collaboration will strengthen us to develop CCUS at Sukowati. We also hope this collaboration will continue to achieve net zero emissions," she said.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina’s business lines and operations.**
