Kilang Pertamina Internasional Optimizes Supporting Programs of UN Sustainable Development Goals
Jakarta, December 30, 2021 - The performance of PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (PT KPI) in overseeing the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) roadmap and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has successfully won a gold appreciation in the PROPER 2021 award. PROPER, or Company Performance Rating Program Award for Environmental Management is the highest award in the environmental field organized by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) of the Republic of Indonesia.
On December 28, 2021, PT KPI, Pertamina's parent company in the refinery and petrochemical sector, won two awards with the highest predicate (gold) in the PROPER Oil and Gas Sub-Sector Processing Unit (Migas UP). The PROPER award handover was attended and witnessed by the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, KH Ma'ruf Amin, and the Indonesian Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya Bakar.
The President Director of PT KPI, Djoko Priyono, stated that the success of the majority of Pertamina's refineries in the PROPER award shows proof of PT KPI's dedication in managing the refinery and petrochemical sector in a sustainable manner. Djoko explained that the achievement of PROPER 2021 is one of the parameters of the company's compliance in carrying out the environment management beyond what is required and empowering the community sustainably.
This year, for the 4th time in a row PT KPI Unit Sei Pakning won a gold PROPER while Unit Kasim managed to win the first gold title in the eastern region of Indonesia. "In fact, through Kampung Gambut Berdikari program, PT KPI Unit Sei Pakning managed to achieve the highest score from the entire Pertamina group," added Djoko. Not only the Sei Pakning and Kasim units, but other Pertamina refineries also bring the 2021 Green PROPER, namely the Dumai, Plaju, and Balikpapan units. Meanwhile, PT Polytama Propindo, a subsidiary of PT KPI's affiliate, won PROPER Gold for the second time.
"On behalf of PT KPI, we express our deepest gratitude for the appreciation given by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. Because, through Proper, PT KPI directly gets an overview of measurable and objective environmental and social management performance assessments, in line with the company's commitment to ensure the company's business sustainability in the long term by consistently implementing ESG aspects and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)," added Djoko.
On the same occasion, the Minister of KLHK RI, Siti Nurbaya Bakar said that this year the PROPER award was carried out by evaluating 2,583 companies with ratings in the black, red, blue, green, and gold categories. "The evaluation of the company's level of compliance with regulations shows that the company's performance looks quite encouraging, even during the pandemic," said Siti Nurbaya.
Guarding the SDGs through the “Beyond PROPER” Initiative
PT KPI's Corporate Secretary, Ifki Sukarya emphasized that PT KPI's achievements in the 2021 PROPER event reflect the company's dedication in managing ESG initiatives. "Internally at PT KPI, we have designed ESG priorities including the decarbonization program, community empowerment program, biodiversity, and the 'Beyond PROPER' program," explained Ifki. This means that PT KPI does not just comply, but achieves beyond compliance with the regulations and legal rules set by the Government.
Ifki continued, beyond compliance programs that support the Sustainable Development Goals have been implemented by Pertamina's refineries. "PT KPI Unit Sei Pakning got the Gold Proper, by carrying out the social innovation of Community-Based Forest and Land Fires Mitigation, where the refinery located in Bengkalis Regency develops various activities to prevent peatland forest fires, encourage the community's economic improvement, and provide easy access to clean water," explained Ifki Sukarya.
Efforts to improve the economy and community independence are carried out by using peatland as agricultural land integrated with the polygowo or intercropping system, consisting of pineapple, lemongrass, and gelam plants; development of peat forest honey bee cultivation; preservation of the peat arboretum; as well as environmental education efforts through the Love Peat School at the elementary school level.
If it is linked to SDGs, the PT KPI Unit Sei Pakning program has implemented 12 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In addition, PT KPI Unit Sei Pakning through the Community-Based Forest and Land Fires Mitigation program has also led PT KPI as a speaker at the UNFCCC CoP26 Forum (UN Climate Change Conference) in Glasgow, to share experiences in efforts to handle peat forest fires.
Meanwhile, for RU VII Kasim, it is the first time to achieve Gold Proper, by promoting the Klayas Mandiri social innovation. "The refinery, which is located in the eastern part of Indonesia, encourages the independence of the residents of Kampung Klayas through the Klayas Bersih Sehat activity which focuses on providing access to clean water and a floating clinic, Klayas Berdikari which focuses on processing sago and sago mushrooms, as well as people's markets, and Klayas Cinta Budaya which focuses on basic education and preservation of Mooi Tribe culture,” explained Ifki Sukarya.
The company's involvement in supporting the government's efforts to break the chain of transmission of the Covid-19 virus also received a special assessment in this year's Proper, where the company has played an active role through vaccination activities in the internal and external scope, and are carried out independently or in collaboration with other parties.
"Towards 2022, PT KPI will continue to support Beyond PROPER programs which are implemented in Pertamina's refinery operating units. In the future, we will continue to welcome the synergy from the central government, regional governments, and community groups in supporting the sustainability of Pertamina's program," stated Ifki Sukarya.
According to him, PROPER is in line with Pertamina's commitment to implement ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance) in an integrated manner from upstream to downstream to support sustainable business. The increase in Pertamina's Gold Proper achievement in 2021 shows Pertamina's seriousness in implementing ESG in all business lines.**
