Permata Hijau Pesisir: Tackling Climate Change and Supporting Indonesia's Decarbonization

Jakarta, June 9, 2024 - The Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) Program of PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) addresses the challenges of climate change through various environmentally focused initiatives. The flagship programs implemented at operational units provide solutions and benefits to the communities around these areas.

"KPI currently has several TJSL programs targeting environmental aspects implemented in various units," said the Corporate Secretary of KPI, Hermansyah Y Nasroen.

Through the Dumai Refinery, Hermansyah explained, KPI implements the Permata Hijau Pesisir Gambut program. "This flagship program focuses on disaster mitigation and recovery in coastal peatland areas," Hermansyah said.

This program consists of three sub-programs: Revitalization and Conservation of Mangrove Coastal Peat Areas, Peat Water Conservation, and Horticultural Agriculture in Peatlands. The program has fostered several innovations, such as the Triangle Mangrove Barrier (Trimba), Adaptable Pool with Auto Water Rotation (A-Pawon), and Hybrid Solar Dryer System (HSDS).

"One of the program's strengths is its success in processing peat water into clean water through the Peat Water Filtration Unit (Filagam), which has produced 5,840 tons of clean water annually," Hermansyah explained.

Another positive impact is that 116 households have gained access to and benefit from clean water through the pipeline system built. Additionally, using Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology, the Tirta Muda Group can produce drinking water, generating an income of up to IDR 86.4 million per year from water sales. The TJSL program related to Permata Hijau Pesisir Gambut offers solutions to problems and disasters, particularly in the Bengkalis Regency, Riau.

Besides the Sumatra, in Central Java, through the Kolak Sekancil (Segara Anakan Lagoon Conservation) program, KPI undertakes community development initiatives.

"KPI contributes to developing Eco-Tourism for the Conservation of the Segara Anakan Lagoon (Kolak Sekancil) in Lempong Pucung Hamlet, Ujung Alang Village, Kampung Laut District by planting more than 1.5 million mangrove trees," Hermansyah explained.

The Cilacap Refinery is also developing the Kolak Sekancil mangrove eco-tourism into an educational tourism site that economically benefits local tourism awareness groups.

The program has had a significant impact, with an average of 250 visitors monthly. "Efforts to boost visitors to the mangrove arboretum include creating a trip package called 'Pesisire Inyong Mandiri.' Through this program, KPI has successfully supported the absorption of approximately 41.3 million tons of CO2 per year and the production of about 224 million tons of O2 yearly," Hermansyah said.

In addition to the programs at the Dumai and Cilacap Refineries, KPI also integrates several aligned programs to preserve the environment, including the Karangsong Mangrove Conservation at Balongan Refinery, Coastal Mangrove Conservation at Kampung Klayas Kasim Refinery, and the integration of horticultural agriculture at Sei Pakning Refinery, which was previously underutilized, turning it into economically valuable land.

"With all the commitment and best efforts, KPI has succeeded in implementing programs that provide sustainable economic benefits for the Indonesian community, especially those living around the refinery operational areas. All these programs can succeed with the support of various stakeholders," Hermansyah concluded.

PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) is a subsidiary of Pertamina that conducts its core business in oil and petrochemical refining according to ESG (Environment, Social & Governance) principles.
