Jakarta, August 23, 2024 – Building upon the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed previously at the ASEAN - Japan Economic Co-Creation Forum, the side event of the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Ministerial Meeting 2023 in Tokyo, PT PERTAMINA (Persero), the Indonesian Energy Company, and the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) are delighted to announce the signing of a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) to enhance cooperation on the measurement and quantification of methane emissions.
The JSA, a concrete outcome of the cooperation, was signed during the AZEC Ministerial Meeting 2024, held at St. Regis Jakarta. The agreement was formalized by A. Salyadi Saputra, Director of Strategic, Portfolio, and New Venture of PERTAMINA; Muhamad Arifin, Director 4 Pertamina EP; Andry, General Manager JOB Pertamina Medco E&P Tomori Sulawesi; and Hiroyuki Mori, EVP, Member of the Board of JOGMEC (Energy Business) of JOGMEC.
The primary purpose of this agreement is to conduct a comprehensive study on the measurement and quantification of methane emission from upstream activities and identifying key initiative to help reducing methane emission at Donggi-Matindok Field and JOB Tomori Field. This joint effort signifies the commitment of both entities to address the critical issue of methane emissions abatement in the energy sector to achieve its goal in accelerating the energy transition and addressing climate change.
A Salyadi Saputra emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, "Signing this JSA marks a significant step forward in our mission to achieve Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2060 or sooner. Accurately measuring methane emissions is vital due to its high global warming potential, which is up to 28 times greater than carbon dioxide, making it a critical effort to mitigate climate change from our operations. This partnership with JOGMEC will help us align with global best practices and enhance our capabilities in methane emission management.”
Pertamina’s VP Corporate Communication, Fadjar Djoko Santoso also added “As the first Indonesian company to join OGMP 2.0, our cooperation with JOGMEC is an actualization of our ongoing commitment to reduce methane emissions. We are hoping to welcome more collaboration in the future to further drive sustainable business practices across our operations. By joining forces with industry leaders and adopting new technologies, we aim to set standard and lead the methane emission management which subsequently support Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contribution from the energy sector.”
In response, Hiroyuki Mori underlined JOGMEC's enthusiasm for the collaboration, “Pertamina and JOGMEC have cooperated in energy resource developments for many years with cordial relationship. We look forward to working together on the challenging project of methane emission management in natural gas value chain with this JSA. Through this project, we plan to study effective ways for methane emission reduction and to consider internationally reliable methods of measurement and calculation of methane emissions based on the actual situation in Southeast Asia .”
The continued collaboration between PERTAMINA and JOGMEC under the AZEC framework highlights the commitment of both parties in addressing global environmental challenges and advancing towards a sustainable future. The AZEC Ministerial Meeting remains a crucial forum for cooperative discussions and the advancement of concrete projects on decarbonization and energy transition.**
