Paser Penajam, September 22, 2023 - To support Indonesia's Net Zero Emission (NZE) target and fulfill its commitment to the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) development, PT Pertamina (Persero) joined a collaboration with the Nusantara Capital City Authority (OIKN) to establish Pertamina Sustainable Energy Center in IKN.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing between Pertamina and OIKN occurred on Friday, September 22, 2023. Nicke Widyawati, President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), and Bambang Susantono, the Head of the Nusantara Capital City Authority, signed the MOU. Present at the signing ceremony was the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, and several ministers from the Indonesian Cabinet during President Widodo's visit to IKN.
Nicke Widyawati, President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), revealed that the Pertamina Sustainable Energy Center development will be at Planning Zone 5 in IKN. It will include several facilities, such as the Pertamina Sustainability Academy, Pertamina Training Institute, Pertamina Research and Innovation Center for Sustainable and Low Carbon Technologies, Pertamina Vocational Education Center, Shared Green Infrastructure, Laboratories, and a Sustainability Start-up Hub.
"Pertamina Sustainable Energy Center is a step towards supporting the Indonesian government's NZE program for 2060, where Pertamina is developing a research center for green and low-carbon technology in Indonesia," she explained.
Nicke added that Pertamina will also undertake the Nature-Ecosystem Based Solution (NEBS) project, a strategy to harness IKN's forest's natural potential for conservation, restoration, and sustainable ecosystem management throughout the IKN region. By utilizing energy from these forests, the IKN area can contribute less emissions to accelerate the NZE target.
Nicke emphasized that besides being rich in environmentally friendly technology utilization, Pertamina's program in IKN aims at preparing professional workers' competencies in the green energy industry. "Pertamina Sustainable Energy Center will become a research and education center focused on developing green, low-carbon, and renewable energy industry through collaboration with global companies and other universities worldwide," Nicke said.
Through these integrated facilities, Nicke added, Pertamina will prepare future generations capable of generating green energy innovations and technologies to support Indonesia's goal of achieving NZE by 2060.
"This is also one of Pertamina's contributions as a state-owned energy company to achieve national energy independence," she added.
In its development phase, Pertamina will also create supporting facilities such as a community hub, including a conference hall, office and business buildings, hotels, a community center, a hospital, and more.
