Jakarta, April 17, 2023 - To strengthen the existing partnership in energy transition and energy security between Indonesia and Japan, PT Pertamina (Persero) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with JOGMEC (Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security).
Previously, Pertamina, through its subsidiary PT Pertamina EP, and JOGMEC have collaborated in joint studies on CO2 injection in the Jatibarang Field in West Java since August 2022. The parties have successfully implemented CO2 Huff and Puff to demonstrate and verify the effects of CO2 EOR and underground CO2 storage in oil and gas fields that have experienced a decline in production. With the historical experience gained through this collaboration between JOGMEC and PT Pertamina EP, PT Pertamina is strengthening its cooperation with a broader scope through the MoU signing, which will provide an effective CO2 study implementation.
The MoU agreement aims to explore and promote projects related to CO2 utilization to enhance oil and gas production through Enhanced Oil/Gas Recovery (EOR/EGR) technology. Other opportunities for cooperation include hydrogen and ammonia production with carbon capture and storage (CCS), as well as CO2 capture and storage from industrial sectors such as power plants, steel mills, and cement factories, including CCS Hub and Cluster Industry. This cooperation also aimed at Japanese companies under JOGMEC.
The MoU signing was carried out by Nicke Widyawati, President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), and Mr. Takahara Ichiro, Chairman & CEO of JOGMEC, witnessed by Arifin Tasrif, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia, and Nishimura Yasutoshi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, on Friday, April 14, 2023, at the G7 Ministerial Meeting on Climate, Energy, and Environment Side Event in Sapporo, Japan.
Nicke Widyawati, President Director of Pertamina, explained that this cooperation is necessary for Indonesia and several Japanese companies currently engaged in upstream oil and gas development projects to face the energy transition era. In addition, Indonesia also has great potential in underground CO2 storage, as well as clean fuel production such as hydrogen and ammonia.
Furthermore, this Memorandum of Understanding will be further deepened with a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) for the Carbon Capture Utilization & Storage (Huff & Puff) implementation in the Sukowati Field owned by Pertamina EP Cepu (PEPC). The continuation of this cooperation is planned to be signed in Indonesia in July 2023 and further strengthened with the second JSA signing next year.
"This cooperation will strengthen Pertamina's efforts in addressing climate change, reducing carbon emissions, and implementing energy transition while maintaining national energy resilience," said Nicke.
JOGMEC is also committed to enhancing Japan's energy resilience and contributing to sustainable economic development and carbon neutrality in the Asian region, including Indonesia, based on the Asian Zero Emission Community (AZEC) and the Asian Energy Transition Initiative (AETI) concepts, both led by the Government of Japan. JOGMEC is committed to contributing to Japan's energy resilience and sustainable economic development and carbon neutrality realization in Indonesia and other Asian countries.
