Jakarta, December 31, 2021 - Pertamina NRE and RusHydro signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday (30/12) regarding the development of hydroelectric power plants (PLTA) in Indonesia. This strategic collaboration has the potential to optimize the utilization of the large water energy potential in Indonesia.
The signing of the memorandum of understanding was carried out virtually by Dannif Danusaputro as Chief Executive Officer of Pertamina NRE and Sergey Machekhin as Deputy Director-General project Engineering, Sustainable Development and International Cooperation of RusHydro.
“This is a very strategic partnership to accelerate the development of NRE in Indonesia, especially hydropower. It is hoped that it can support the acceleration of achieving the National Energy Mix target where NRE reaches 23 percent by 2025. Pertamina NRE and RusHydro have the same aspiration in the energy transition, that is providing cleaner energy, "said Dannif.
This strategic cooperation includes not only the development of hydropower but also the potential for other new and renewable energy (NRE). In the area of hydropower development and water resources infrastructure projects, the cooperation includes developing a strategy for utilizing water resources in Indonesia that has economic value, including identifying locations and joint studies, and exploring offtakers. Whereas, in other NRE potentials, the cooperation includes optimization of existing power plants, technology transfer, development of innovative technology in NRE projects, as well as the acceleration of capacity building and the competence of human resources.
RusHydro is the largest power generation company in Russia with a current installed capacity of 38 GW. Although focusing on hydropower, RusHydro also operates several geothermal power plants and pumped storage hydropower plants in Russia. The company, which is 61.7 percent owned by the Russian government, focuses on providing clean energy-based electricity, which currently has a share of 81.5 percent in its generator portfolio.
The potential for renewable energy in Indonesia is very large, including the potential for hydro energy (water). In the roadmap for the development of NRE power plants listed in the General Plan for Power Generation (RUPTL) 2021 – 2030, the largest annual addition to the installed capacity of hydropower is in 2025, which is 2,478 MW. And in 2030, it is targeted that the total additional installed capacity will reach 9,272 MW. Whereas, the areas with the largest PLTA installed capacity targets in the roadmap are Java, Madura, and Bali, with a total capacity of around 3,900 MW in 2030.
Pertamina NRE is actively exploring strategic cooperation with other parties to support energy transition efforts. Recently, Pertamina NRE also signed a memorandum of understanding with PT Pembangkitan Jawa Bali (PJB) regarding synergies in clean energy supply projects both in the country and abroad, such as the potential utilization of hydropower for green hydrogen. Through energy transition, Pertamina supports the government's target of realizing net zero emissions by 2060.**
