Pertamina NRE Group and Genvia Sign MoU on Advanced Green Hydrogen Production Technology

September 27, 2024 – PT Pertamina Power Indonesia (“Pertamina NRE”), PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (“PGE”), and Genvia have signed memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on developing green hydrogen production through the integration of advanced solid oxide electrolyzer (SOEL) technology with geothermal heat resources. The signing was conducted in the Indonesia – France Business Forum on September 26th, 2024.

The agreement includes the assessment  of techno-economics  of using  Genvia’s advanced SOEL high-temperature technology to reduce energy consumption in green hydrogen production. The assessment will be conducted on one of PGE’s geothermal sites.

“We at Pertamina NRE are excited about this partnership with Genvia, which we believe will significantly accelerate the advancement of green hydrogen initiatives in Indonesia. This collaboration underscores our commitment to explore innovative solutions to achieve cost-effective hydrogen production and to maximize Indonesia green energy potential, such as geothermal. We believe that this will bring lots of benefits for Indonesia, including to reduce carbon emissions” ” said John Anis, Pertamina NRE CEO.

PGE, Pertamina NRE’s geothermal subsidiary, will provide geothermal heat resources for the study. The collaboration leverages PGE’s expertise in geothermal energy and Pertamina NRE’s broader clean energy portfolio, which spans renewable energy, green hydrogen, battery storage, electric vehicles, and carbon management.

“Through this collaboration with Pertamnia NRE and PGE, we see great potential in combining Genvia’s cutting-edge technology with Indonesia’s abundant geothermal resources to drive the future of sustainable energy. By exploring the potential of high-temperature SOEL technology, we aim to unlock new efficiencies in green hydrogen production” said Florence Lambert., CEO of Genvia.

In support of the collaboration, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to France, Andorra, Monaco, and UNESCO, Mohamad Oemar, expressed his optimism for the partnership, stating: “We hope this cooperation will accelerate Indonesia's achievement of net-zero emissions.”

The Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), Fadjar Djoko Santoso, stated that hydrogen production development is one of Pertamina's energy transition initiatives supporting the green business program.

"Clean hydrogen is one of Pertamina's future businesses. This collaboration will accelerate the target of achieving new renewable energy in Indonesia," Fadjar said.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement.
