Dubai, December 1, 2023 - Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) and the Nusantara Capital City Authority (OIKN) have signed a joint study agreement (JSA) concerning Nature and Ecosystem-Based Solutions/NEBS during the COP 28 event in Dubai on Friday (12/1).
The signing was conducted by the CEO of Pertamina NRE, Dannif Danusaputro, and OIKN's Deputy for Environment and Natural Resources, Myrna Asnawati Safitri. This collaboration will support the development of the Nusantara Capital City, which is conceptualized as a modern, green, and sustainable city. For Pertamina NRE, this collaboration aligns with its commitment to oversee energy transition and support the achievement of Indonesia's nationally determined contribution (NDC) targets.
"The collaboration between Pertamina NRE and OIKN is highly positive, especially regarding its impacts on climate, local communities, and biodiversity in the Nusantara Capital City. I am confident that Pertamina NRE can play a strategic role in supporting the Nusantara Capital City to become a modern and green city in line with sustainable development," stated Dannif.
"OIKN welcomes this collaboration with Pertamina NRE to reduce emissions in the Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) sector, especially through the Nusantara Forest Carbon Project, to realize Nusantara as a Net Zero City. This concept fundamentally maintains existing forests and reforests damaged ones located within the Nusantara Capital City area," said Myrna.
The collaboration between Pertamina NRE and OIKN covers three key aspects: climate, communities, and biodiversity. Regarding the climate aspect, it involves carbon projects, including agriculture and agroforestry, forest fire mitigation and control, blue carbon forests, restoration, and forest conservation. In terms of communities, it involves engaging local communities in sustainable forest management and encouraging socio-economic development in surrounding villages. These efforts aligned with the commitment of Pertamina NRE and OIKN to support inclusivity and sustainable development. Meanwhile, in terms of biodiversity, it encompasses conservation efforts and biodiversity enhancement.
Based on preliminary studies, this NEBS initiative has the potential to generate around 29 million tons of CO2e carbon credits over 30 years from an area of approximately 148 thousand hectares. Previously, Pertamina NRE collaborated with Perum Perhutani in developing NEBS projects, where one concession located in North Kalimantan has finalized a feasibility study.
The implementation of NEBS plays a strategic role in climate change control efforts. Additionally, NEBS, particularly the reforestation and forest conservation approach, will protect biodiversity, provide employment opportunities, and strengthen food security for local communities.**
