August 31, 2023 – PT Pertamina (Persero) is studying to increase the subsidized RON 90 gasoline’s octane rating to RON 92. It is done by blending Pertalite with 7 percent Ethanol, resulting in Pertamax Green 92. However, the study, or the Phase 2 of Langit Biru Program, is still in progress internally and has not been finalized.
"This program is the result of Pertamina's internal study, and there has been no decision from the government. We will certainly propose this, and further discussions will take place," said the President Director of Pertamina, Nicke Widyawati, while attending a Hearing with Commission VII of the Indonesian Parliament in Jakarta on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.
Nicke added that if the proposal can be discussed and adopted as a government program, its price will be regulated by the government. "It is not possible for the Special Assignment Fuel (JBKP) to have its price determined by the market, as there are subsidy and compensation mechanisms within it," Nicke explained.
According to Nicke, this study is being conducted to produce higher quality fuel, as fuel with a higher octane rating will undoubtedly be more environmentally friendly.
"For instance, if at the same price, the public gets something better – with a higher octane number that is better for engines, resulting in lower emissions – this is just a proposal and should not be subject to debate," Nicke clarified.
Nicke emphasized that Phase 2 of Langit Biru Program is still an internal study at Pertamina. For the implementation, it will be proposed to the government, and the government will have the authority to decide.
