Balikpapan, October 25, 2024 – A collaboration within the Pertamina Group between PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional and Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) is set to install a rooftop Solar Power Plant (PLTS) with a capacity of 2.5 MWp at the Balikpapan Refinery. This PLTS will become the largest rooftop solar installation within Pertamina's operational areas.
Norman Ginting, Director of Project & Operations of Pertamina NRE, expressed that this collaboration to build the Solar Power Plant (PLTS) reflects Pertamina’s concrete commitment.
"I appreciate and am excited about this strategic collaboration. It is not our first collaboration with Kilang Pertamina Internasional on PLTS projects within refinery areas. Pertamina NRE remains committed to supporting emission reduction efforts across Pertamina's operations, especially with this PLTS at the Balikpapan Refinery, which will be Pertamina's largest in capacity. We are pleased to see this collaboration continue," said Norman at the PLTS construction commencement ceremony.
Didik Bahagia, Director of Operations of PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional, stated that this PLTS construction represents a substantial contribution and collaboration, marking a significant step in Pertamina’s commitment to utilizing renewable energy and preserving the environment.
“This PLTS ceremony is a meaningful milestone in Pertamina’s journey to reduce emissions and achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2060. If this PLTS succeeds and is completed, the total PLTS capacity across PT KPI, from Dumai to Balikpapan, will reach 12.37 MWp,” said Didik.
The PLTS will be installed on the rooftops of the HSSE building, warehouse, and workshop buildings at the Balikpapan refinery. With this installation, the Balikpapan Refinery is expected to reduce emissions by approximately 2,736 tons of CO2 equivalent per year. Currently, operational PLTS installations across KPI refinery areas span four sites with a total capacity of 9.87 MWp, located at the Dumai, Balongan, Cilacap, and Plaju Refineries. With the addition of the rooftop PLTS at the Balikpapan Refinery, the total installed capacity across KPI refineries will reach 12.37 MWp, with a potential emission reduction of 12,722 tons of CO2 equivalent per year.
Didik also appreciated PT KPI’s operational performance and cost optimization, which have demonstrated strong results.
"Currently, our operational performance and cost optimization are showing good results. It has been challenging, but we are delivering the best results for the company," said Didik.
He hopes that this PLTS construction will create a mutually beneficial relationship with PNRE as an effort to reduce losses and maintain PT KPI's operations smoothly.
"With the Revamp program completed, let us ensure stable operations so next year, we can complete the RFCC for capacity expansion. We hope that this mutual relationship with PNRE will significantly contribute to the company, including through the construction of this PLTS and other initiatives," Didik added.
The Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), Fadjar Djoko Santoso, emphasized that Pertamina Group's collaboration on renewable energy utilization promotes Pertamina’s decarbonization efforts as part of its business strategy to achieve Net Zero Emissions (NZE). Pertamina will continue intensifying decarbonization efforts, aligning with its commitment to being a responsible company.
"Transitional energy utilization can enhance energy efficiency and support decarbonization targets within existing businesses. We hope that Pertamina’s role will drive renewable energy adoption on a larger scale," Fadjar added.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.
