Pertamina Presents Sustainable Integrated Business at Hannover Messe 2024

Hannover, Germany, April 23, 2024 - At the International Hannover Messe 2024 forum, the President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero) outlined the commitment and strategy of sustainable integrated business with intelligent operations.

Pertamina, with the Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia, participated in the Hannover Messe 2024 event themed "Forging Smart & Sustainable Industry" organized by ECADIN on April 22, 2024.

During the discussion session at the Indonesian Pavilion, the President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Nicke Widyawati, presented Pertamina's role as a state-owned enterprise managing energy in an integrated manner within the energy ecosystem complexity in Indonesia.

"Pertamina is the only state-owned enterprise developing integrated energy businesses covering upstream, midstream, and downstream operations. Our reach is not only limited to the domestic market; we also have a significant presence overseas. However, our primary goal remains to strengthen our country’s self-reliance and energy resilience," Nicke emphasized.

Nicke elaborated on Pertamina's upstream business, which manages 40 domestic and 25 international oil blocks.

"Pertamina operates 24% of domestic blocks and significantly contributes to domestic oil production, reaching 70% and gas 28%. These numbers emphasize our crucial role in safeguarding Indonesia's energy security," she added.

Furthermore, Nicke unveiled Pertamina's strategy for refinery development amid the global energy transition. She stated that while the company is committed to sustainable business, energy security remains the top priority.

"The refinery development efforts focus on enhancing efficiency, reducing sulfur and nitrogen content, and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions," she explained.

To address the fossil fuels to the renewable energy transition, Nicke outlined that Pertamina is strengthening gas fuels as a bridge. With abundant gas reserves, Pertamina is focusing on enhancing midstream and downstream infrastructure.

Additionally, she mentioned that Pertamina has ventured into renewable energy sources such as geothermal. In the energy transportation business, Pertamina already owns 700 vessels facilitating domestic and international trade and forming an integral part of Pertamina's integrated energy value chain.

"As a state-owned enterprise, we are responsible for providing accessible, clean, and affordable energy to the Indonesian people and ensuring fair energy distribution nationwide," said Nicke.

In the energy transition era, she added that Pertamina adopts a dual-growth strategy, strengthening legacy businesses to meet energy security, affordability, and accessibility while simultaneously implementing decarbonization programs. Regarding renewable energy, Pertamina is developing low-carbon products, starting from existing natural resources in Indonesia, such as geothermal, biofuel, and CPO.

To support this dual-growth strategy, Nicke said Pertamina has undergone sustainable business transformation and digitalization. She emphasized that digitalization is one of Pertamina's strategic agendas to control the broad and complex operations from upstream to downstream.

"We believe that accelerated digital transformation will leverage our position in terms of market value. Therefore, we are more focused and allocate a portion of our budget and resources to digitalization," she stated.

In addition to Pertamina, the Forging Smart & Sustainable Industry session was attended by other international panelists, including Zoya Alexeeva, VP of Software Strategy at Schneider Electric, and Lucretia Loescher, COO of thyssenkrupp Uhde GmbH. The session was witnessed by Maman Abdurrahman from Commission VII of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Dony Maryadi Oekon, and Eddy Soeparno, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Industry, and the Indonesian Ambassador to Germany, Arif Havas Oegroseno.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.
