Rome, Italy, October 21, 2023 - Pertamina's efforts to safeguard national energy resilience are significant and closely related to maintain national food security. It was conveyed by the President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Nicke Widyawati, during The FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) Science and Innovation Forum, which is part of The World Food Forum 2023, Rome, Italy, on October 19, 2023.
According to Nicke, Indonesia possesses significant domestic resources for energy use, including food products to produce bioenergy. "Pertamina has an environmentally friendly business roadmap, one of which involves the biofuels implementation. Biofuels are a key element in the transportation decarbonization sector," Nicke stated.
The biofuels derived from palm oil, such as B35, is proved to reduce oil imports, particularly diesel, increase the use of renewable energy, and simultaneously reduce emissions. "In 2022, it is estimated to have reduced emissions equivalent to 28 million tons of CO2," Nicke explained.
Nicke also added that bioenergy production in Indonesia does not distrupt the food security because the processed material for energy from waste or plant sources residue. "We must ensure that the efforts to achieve energy resilience following the efforts to achieve food security, with no disruptions," Nicke emphasized.
During this occasion, Nicke also discussed the Energy Trilemma that Indonesia, including Pertamina, must address, including energy security, sustainability, and affordability.
"Currently, energy security is a priority for Indonesia, but at the same time, we do not neglect energy affordability and sustainability," Nicke said. Therefore, according to Nicke, it is essential to undertake an energy transition by using domestic natural resources to reduce carbon emissions while also providing independence and energy resilience for Indonesia.
Regarding energy potential, Indonesia has the opportunity to play a significant role in supporting energy security, as it is one of the world's largest producers of nickel and bauxite, essential materials for Electric Vehicle (EV) battery development. Indonesia has potential in new and renewable energy sources, from nature-based solutions to carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS).
Pertamina is committed to supporting the Indonesian government's goal of achieving Net Zero by 2060 or earlier by developing a decarbonization roadmap for assets, establishing environmentally friendly business practices, and developing carbon offset programs.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
