Jakarta, May 20, 2024 - PT Pertamina (Persero) has successfully enhanced its strategic role in providing energy for Indonesia by managing two major oil and gas blocks, Rokan Block in Riau and Mahakam Block in East Kalimantan. Pertamina's ability to operate and conduct upstream oil and gas business in these two blocks brings a new spirit that symbolizes a national revival to achieve energy resilience, independence, and sovereignty.
Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), revealed that since taking over the management of Mahakam Block and Rokan Block, Pertamina has been able to increase oil and gas production, positively impacting the upstream sector performance.
“Mahakam and Rokan are mature oil and gas fields. Through various innovations and the application of appropriate technologies, Pertamina has managed to curb the natural decline in production while simultaneously boosting oil and gas production, which is crucial in meeting energy needs in Indonesia,” Fadjar said.
According to Fadjar, Pertamina continues to invest in drilling new wells as a strategic move to maintain production levels in these mature fields. Pertamina employs best practices, innovations, and technologies that enhance safety and speed while reducing drilling costs.
“After one year of operation by PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM), in 2019, Mahakam Block produced 32.1 thousand barrels of oil per day and 640 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, making it one of the largest gas producers in Indonesia,” he said.
Fadjar added that Pertamina has been drilling aggressively. As a result, in 2022, Pertamina discovered new oil and gas reserves in the Mahakam Block amounting to tens of billions of cubic feet of gas and millions of barrels of oil.
In 2023, Pertamina discovered new gas and condensate reserves in the Adiwarna-1x exploration well in the Mahakam Block. The drilling reached a final depth of 4,290 meters and successfully discovered layers of gas and condensate hydrocarbons.
In Rokan Block, Pertamina, through PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR), actively runs a drilling program. PHR’s current oil production reaches 161 thousand barrels of oil per day (MBOPD), higher than the production before the takeover. Through this drilling, the oil and gas reserves volume of Rokan Block has increased by tens of millions of barrels after one year of management.
PHR has successfully drilled more than 1,000 wells and executed 15,000 Work Over (WO) and Well Intervention Well Services (WIWS) activities, utilizing 60% Domestic Component Level (TKDN).
“Rokan Block recorded oil and gas lifting of approximately 59 million barrels in 2023. This achievement is a significant increase from the previous 57.3 million barrels,” Fadjar stated.
In 2024, PHR will continue to increase oil and gas production by conducting integrated drilling to produce quality, efficient, reliable, and safe oil wells. A total of 570 wells will be drilled to increase the national oil reserves in the Rokan Working Area
“Pertamina has successfully reinstated Rokan Block as the highest oil producer in Indonesia, with production reaching 161,623 barrels of oil per day,” Fadjar announced.
Rokan is Indonesia's most productive oil and gas block in history, with over 11 thousand active wells and 13 thousand km of pipeline network, about twice the distance from Sabang to Merauke. More than 11 billion barrels of crude oil have been produced from the Rokan Working Area from several fields, including Minas, Duri, Bangko, Bekasap, Balam South, Kotabatak, Petani, Pematang, Petapahan, and Pager.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
