Pioneering Carbon Trading in Indonesia, Pertamina NRE Actively Promotes Carbon Neutral Events
Jakarta, October 30, 2024 – Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) not only pioneered carbon trading on the IDX Carbon in 2023 but also consistently campaigned for and supported carbon-neutral events organized by various parties.
A carbon-neutral event is an activity organized without generating carbon emissions. Or when emissions produced are offset by purchasing carbon credits, making the event carbon-neutral. Pertamina NRE, as a seller of carbon credits, has traded credits to various event organizers.
"We hope the carbon-neutral event campaign can educate and inspire the public to support efforts in reducing carbon emissions, one of which is by offsetting emissions from events through the purchase of carbon credits," said the Corporate Secretary of Pertamina NRR, Dicky Septriadi.
As of October 2024, Pertamina NRE has supported the provision of carbon credits to offset emissions from several events, including the Anugerah Jurnalistik Pertamina 2024 for West Java, the ESG Exhibition held by PT Pertamina Bina Medika, the Pertamina Goes to Campus (PGTC) program at University Riau (Unri), the Indonesia Millennial and Gen-Z Summit organized by IDN Times, and the BBM Satu Harga program launch in four provinces of Indonesia.
The carbon credits traded by Pertamina NRE come from the Lahendong Geothermal Power Plant Units 5 and 6, which hold a Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Certificate (SPE GRK). It means that purchasing carbon credits from Pertamina NRE supports the development of geothermal energy, a form of green energy.
Dicky added that Pertamina NRE's commitment to sustainability is applied in all aspects of the company’s business.
"In each event, we help calculate potential carbon emissions, including emissions from participant transportation, electricity use, water, gas, and waste generated during the event. Further, these calculated emissions are compensated with the necessary number of carbon credits we provide for offset," he continued.
The Anugerah Jurnalistik Pertamina 2024 for West Java is one example of a carbon-neutral event supported by Pertamina NRE. Through this concept, all carbon emissions were carefully calculated, from energy use and transportation to the consumption of goods that could generate emissions. These total emissions were then offset by purchasing carbon credits.
Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), Fadjar Djoko Santoso, added that the company encourages decarbonization across all its activities. It reflects Pertamina’s commitment and efforts to achieve the Net Zero Emissions 2060 target.
"One of Pertamina's strategies in supporting the achievement of NZE is through carbon-neutral initiatives and carbon trading. We hope that all parties can utilize this carbon-neutral event to promote more widespread decarbonization," said Fadjar.
In the future, Pertamina NRE plans to increase the volume of carbon credits from other clean energy sources, such as Biogas Power Plants (PLTBg).
This initiative aligns with Pertamina's commitment to support the government's target of achieving net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060.
