Italy, October 18, 2023 - Pertamina is committed to fully support the Indonesian government and the global community in addressing the current energy challenges. The company is ready to collaborate to face energy transition, decarbonization, and the energy trilemma.
"Right now, Pertamina's roadmap involves a strategy of decarbonizing the carbon-positive businesses, developing carbon-neutral businesses, and providing compensation for carbon-negative businesses, which will result in Net Zero Emissions," explained President Director of Pertamina Nicke Widyawati during a public lecture at the University of Naples "L'Orientale" in Naples, Italy, on Tuesday, October 17, 2023.
Regarding energy resilience, Pertamina will continue to support the Indonesian government's target to increase oil production to one million barrels per day and gas production by 12 BSCFD.
Pertamina also ensures energy availability, accessibility, affordability, acceptability, and sustainability for the public. It includes programs to facilitate access to energy for the community, such as the One Village One Outlet (OVOO) program, Pertashop, and the One Price Fuel program in remote areas.
In line with these efforts, Pertamina is committed to decarbonizing its business activities and operations, such as integrating chemical and biofuel plants, ensuring that the energy transition does not disrupt energy resilience.
Pertamina is committed to the Indonesian government's commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2060. One of the efforts is to change its operations and business into green operations.
As a form of commitment, Nicke further mentioned that Pertamina allocated 15 percent of its total Capex for low-carbon/green business portfolio development, a significantly higher figure than other energy companies.
As one of the world's largest biofuel suppliers, Indonesia has established a biofuel industry. Since 2008, biodiesel mixed with palm oil fuel was used, namely B5 until now B35.
"With this program, we can reduce the import of fossil fuels, especially diesel, increase the use of renewable energy, and simultaneously reduce emissions, estimated to be equivalent to 28 million tons of CO2 in 2022 alone," Nicke added.
Nicke also stated that through its Subholding Power & New Renewable Energy (PNRE), Pertamina continues to build a Clean Energy business portfolio as a primary focus to support Pertamina's and Indonesia's decarbonization goals.
According to Nicke, Pertamina has also begun applying Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technologies, with the first CO2 injection in the Pertamina EP Jatibarang field, West Java. "CCUS technology is capable of increasing oil and gas production through CO2-EOR while significantly reducing GHG emissions," she explained.
Pertamina is also building a strategic partnership with state-owned agroforestry enterprises to lead decarbonization efforts through Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) projects. Pertamina has identified nine areas with the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 11 million tons per year of CO2 equivalent.
By 2022, Pertamina has successfully reduced carbon emissions by 31 percent across its upstream and downstream operations. The company believes that these strategic initiatives will be the driving force in achieving Pertamina's goal of becoming a global energy company that creates value and commits to long-term sustainability.
"Our commitment to sustainability aligns with the global movement that emphasizes the environmental, social, and governance integration issues into business strategy and sustainable development goals," Nicke concluded.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
