Jakarta, January 10, 2025 – PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) continues to solidify its position as a leader in transitioning to environmentally friendly Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. This milestone is marked by the achievement of the International Sustainability Carbon Certification (ISCC) for the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) and the European Union (EU) certification for producing SAF from used cooking oil (UCO). With these certifications, KPI's SAF fulfills sustainability requirements and can be accepted and traded in compliance with the regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) CORSIA (worldwide) and the European Union.
“The TDHT (Treated Distillate Hydro Treating) unit located at the Cilacap Refinery successfully obtained ISCC CORSIA and EU certifications for SAF in early December 2024,” said Hermansyah Y Nasroen, Corporate Secretary of KPI.
According to Hermansyah, the certification demonstrates international recognition of KPI’s ability and capacity to produce SAF. He further explained that the TDHT Unit at the Cilacap Refinery can produce not only Pertamina SAF but also renewable diesel fuel derived from 100% plant-based materials since 2022. This product, known as Pertamina Renewable Diesel (RD) or Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), has also been certified by ISCC.
Hermansyah stated that KPI continues to innovate in SAF production through the USAF (UCO to SAF) Project, initiated in 2024.
“KPI previously produced Pertamina SAF using Refined Bleached Deodorized Palm Kernel Oil (RBDPKO) as feedstock. Now, KPI is ready to take the next step by producing the first ISCC-certified Pertamina SAF in Indonesia and the region, utilizing used cooking oil as feedstock, with production planned for the first quarter of 2025,” Hermansyah said.
SAF produced from a blend of used cooking oil has the advantage of significantly lower carbon emissions, exceeding 90% reduction compared to jet fuel derived entirely from fossil fuels. Additionally, utilizing used cooking oil as a feedstock for SAF production helps reduce waste from used cooking oil, which could otherwise pose environmental pollution risks.
In preparation for producing SAF from used cooking oil, Hermansyah noted that in January 2025, the Cilacap Refinery will replace its catalysts to process used cooking oil into SAF.
“The catalyst that will be used is the result of Technology and Innovation development by Pertamina in collaboration with experts and engineers at PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional. This catalyst is produced in a domestic catalyst manufacturing facility, showcasing Indonesia's mastery of advanced technology,” Hermansyah explained.
Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), Fadjar Djoko Santoso, added that the Pertamina Group is committed to developing environmentally friendly energy, including SAF, to support the aviation industry in Indonesia.
“Through green fuel development, Pertamina is determined to fulfill the mandate of Indonesia’s energy security and sovereignty while contributing to sustainability in the country,” concluded Fadjar.
