Karawang, March 30, 2024 - The Jawa-1 Combined Cycle Power Plant (PLTGU) with a capacity of 1760 MW is ready for operation after undergoing a series of tests such as plant reliability run & net dependable capacity test precisely on Friday (29/3). With these completed processes, Indonesia will officially have the largest integrated power plant in Southeast Asia equipped with a regasification system.
The Jawa-1 PLTGU is managed by PT Jawa Satu Power (JSP), owned by a consortium consisting of Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) with 40 percent ownership, Marubeni with 40 percent, and Sojitz with 20 percent. In this important moment, the CEO of Pertamina NRE, John Anis, expressed his tremendous appreciation to all levels of management and officers of JSP for their dedication and extraordinary hard work in completing this mega project.
"I extend my heartfelt congratulations and highest appreciation to the management and officers of JSP who have shown remarkable patience, persistence, and determination in facing challenges until finally realizing this crucial moment. Support from all parties is continuously expected so that Jawa-1 PLTGU can demonstrate operational excellence and bring optimal benefits to Pertamina and the Republic of Indonesia," said John.
He added that with all its unique installations, Jawa-1 PLTGU could become one of the energy transition pillars that Pertamina and Indonesia take pride in.
President Director of JSP, Asistia Semiawan, stated, "On behalf of all levels of management and officers of JSP, I express our gratitude for the support of all parties and other stakeholders who continuously place their trust in us, enabling us to overcome all challenges. We have completed and fulfilled all formal administrative processes. Hopefully, everything will proceed smoothly, so we can contribute to supporting electricity provision through collaboration with our strategic partner, PLN."
Jawa-1 PLTGU is a power plant that integrates a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) with a 1760 MW capacity power generation unit consisting of two power units, each with a capacity of 880 MW. Unit 2 has been in commercial operation since December 2023. This project connects gas supply availability in Papua with electricity needs in Java and the Bali Islands.
The project has several advantages, including greater efficiency by utilizing the latest generation single shaft combined cycle gas turbine technology, making the electricity selling price competitive. Operationally, this power plant has black start capability technology, enabling it to self-start when the grid is not available for imported power for start-up purposes.
By using liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a fuel source, the greenhouse gas emissions produced are lower compared to coal or oil-fired power plants. It follows efforts to reduce carbon emissions from the electricity sector. Furthermore, this power plant utilizes closed-loop cooling tower technology, which improves reliability by reducing the volume of seawater used to support plant operations.
The Jawa-1 PLTGU operation will be a significant achievement for Pertamina and will also add to the portfolio of clean energy utilization in Pertamina's business. Natural gas plays a very strategic role in the energy transition period, where it will support national energy security, and its low emissions place it in the clean energi category.
"With state-of-the-art technology, Jawa-1 PLTGU is projected to reduce carbon emissions by 3.3 million tCO2e per year, a significant figure for contributing to net zero emissions. It is one of the important milestones created through the strategic synergy of SOEs such as Pertamina and PLN, private companies Marubeni and Sojitz, and others who are highly committed to jointly realizing the transition towards clean energy in Indonesia. Thank you for the best support from all parties," John added.
Vice President of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, revealed that the successful operation readiness of Jawa-1 PLTGU is one of the important milestones in Indonesia's energy transition. This integrated power plant is expected to contribute significantly to carbon emission reduction, thereby achieving Net Zero Emission (NZE) in Indonesia. "Jawa-1 PLTU, a result of SOE and partner synergy, shows that achieving NZE will be faster with the support of all parties. We hope this project will drive other strategic energy transition projects," explained Fadjar.
Pertamina NRE is strongly committed to fulfilling the mandate of achieving national energy security, as well as conducting a fair and sustainable energy transition through low-carbon new and renewable energy technologies development to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2060. Pertamina NRE is also ready to expand its wings globally by projecting expansion into foreign markets.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
