Houston, Texas, October 31, 2024 – PT Pertamina (Persero) has partnered with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to enhance the understanding of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technology. This collaboration includes a benchmarking study with several oil and gas companies in Houston, United States.
The Vice President of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, stated that this benchmarking activity allows Pertamina to gain deeper insights and build international collaboration to develop CCS and CCUS technology in Indonesia. “CCS/CCUS technology application is part of Pertamina's commitment to decarbonization, aimed at reducing emissions, providing sustainable energy solutions, and supporting the government’s energy self-sufficiency goals,” said Fadjar.
Pertamina and USAID have collaborated on technical assistance for the CCS/CCUS technology commercial application since 2023. This cooperation is further strengthened by benchmarking with CCS/CCUS business leaders in the United States. “We hope this partnership will broaden our understanding of regulatory frameworks, market potential, advanced technology, and financial support, making the CCS and CCUS implementation in Indonesia effective and a promising business for the future,” added Fadjar.
During the business best practice activities in Houston, Fadjar noted that Pertamina engaged directly with CCS/CCUS industry leaders in the United States, discussing various topics. It included visiting ExxonMobil, which recently acquired Denbury Inc., a company experienced in CCS/CCUS solutions and enhanced oil recovery.
Pertamina also participated in sharing sessions at Chevron’s Drilling Support Center and Pipeline Control Center. Pertamina and USAID attended knowledge-sharing sessions at Occidental Petroleum (Oxy), an energy company developing innovative approaches to achieving net-zero fuel solutions. The delegation also met the representatives from Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy and the Center for Carbon Management in Energy (CCME) at the University of Houston.
Retno Setianingsih, Senior Energy Program Specialist at USAID/Indonesia, stated that the United States supports the Indonesian government in expanding reliable and equitable energy services to advance sustainable development and inclusive economic growth. “As part of this commitment, USAID has provided technical assistance to support Indonesia’s transition to a low-carbon economy,” said Retno.
Stella Octaviani Bustan, Senior Expert in Investor Relations at PT Pertamina (Persero) and one of the benchmarking participants, added that this business best practice activity enhances Pertamina’s insight, technical capacity, and expertise, especially regarding CCUS implementation.
“Achieving sustainability requires collaboration with many parties, and we are very grateful to USAID for the support and cooperation that has significantly helped us realize energy transition through low-carbon solutions and achieve broader sustainability goals,” said Stella.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement: Goal 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy, Goal 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Goal 13 – Climate Action. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
