Jakarta, October 24, 2024 - PT Pertamina (Persero) supports the energy self-sufficiency policy of President Prabowo Subianto's administration, which targets achieving self-sufficiency in energy within the next 4-5 years. President Prabowo's emphasis on this goal has been conveyed on several occasions, including during the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Inauguration, the Merah Putih Ministerial Cabinet Announcement, and the Cabinet Plenary Session. Energy self-sufficiency is one of the 17 priority programs under President Prabowo’s leadership within the Asta Cita vision.
Vice President of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, stated that in supporting the energy self-sufficiency target, Pertamina is committed to maintaining energy security by sustaining and enhancing existing businesses, as well as expanding low-carbon, more environmentally friendly ventures.
Currently, Pertamina is developing four breakthroughs in the low-carbon sector, including the development of biofuels, petrochemicals, geothermal energy, and Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCS/CCUS). These innovations are part of the company's commitment to supporting Indonesia's target of achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060 or sooner.
"These breakthroughs will strengthen energy self-sufficiency while also contributing to carbon emission reductions, diversifying our business portfolio, and opening up new business opportunities in the future," said Fadjar.
Pertamina has successfully developed biofuel as a more environmentally friendly fuel with a blend of plant-based materials. Pertamina has successfully produced and utilized B35 biodiesel.
In addition to B35, Pertamina is also developing Pertamax Green and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for aviation, which includes a blend of plant-based materials. "Pertamina’s biofuel initiatives have positively impacted emission reductions, adding value to society. In 2023, implementing B35 reduced CO2 emissions by up to 32.7 million tons," he explained.
In geothermal development, Fadjar added that Pertamina currently manages 15 geothermal working areas (WKP) with an installed capacity of 672 MW, which will be increased to 1 GW in the next two to three years. Pertamina has geothermal reserves ready for further development.
Meanwhile, Fadjar mentioned that in petrochemical development, Pertamina aims to reach a production capacity of 3.2 million tons by 2025, up from the current 1.9 million tons per year. To support this business expansion, Pertamina is open to partnerships with various institutions domestically and internationally.
In the upstream oil and gas sector, Pertamina will also contribute to emission reduction through the CCS/CCUS development. The cumulative potential of CCS/CCUS development is expected to reduce emissions by up to 1.5 million tons by 2029. Some projects are underway in the Sukowati Field, Jatibarang Field, and Ramba Field.
In addition to project development, Pertamina is engaging local communities in utilizing green energy, contributing to energy self-sufficiency through the “Independent Energy Village” Program. To date, the initiative has reached 85 partner villages across Indonesia. Pertamina's various innovations in achieving energy self-sufficiency and decarbonization have exceeded emission reduction targets.
Pertamina's realization of Scope 1 & 2 emissions reduction reached 124% of the target in 2023. Pertamina achieved a decarbonization rate of 1.13 million tons of CO2e, surpassing the target of 910,000 tons of CO2e. This success in decarbonization has placed Pertamina in the top position in the ESG ranking worldwide, according to Sustainalytics, in the Integrated Oil and Gas sub-sector out of 61 global companies.
"With the stakeholder’s support, Pertamina is optimistic about supporting the government's energy self-sufficiency program while achieving NZE in line with the national target," emphasized Fadjar.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
