Jakarta, December 4, 2024 – Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) strongly supports the Indonesian government’s Asta Cita vision, especially regarding energy self-sufficiency and environmental sustainability. It was conveyed by the Chief Executive Officer of Pertamina NRE, John Anis, during the Canadian trade mission's visit to Indonesia on Monday (2/12).
In his keynote speech, John highlighted Pertamina’s initiatives to optimize new and renewable energy sources to bolster energy security.
“The current geopolitical and global economic situation greatly impacts the energy industry. Thus, we must strengthen energy security while prioritizing environmental sustainability. These two aspects are part of the Indonesian government’s Asta Cita mission, which we fully support,” John said.
He explained that these missions align with Pertamina’s dual strategy: maximizing the existing energy business to support national energy security while building a low-carbon business to drive the energy transition and achieve the net zero emission target by 2060.
Pertamina NRE is at the forefront of developing a low-carbon business, including the development of bioethanol for biofuels. John noted that fossil fuels are still needed to support 8% economic growth due to their accessibility and affordability, especially in transportation. Blending bio-based materials into fuel makes it more environmentally friendly, positioning biofuels as a key solution during the energy transition.
Pertamina NRE, in collaboration with PT Sinergi Gula Nusantara (SGN), plans to establish a bioethanol plant in Glenmore, Banyuwangi, with an annual production capacity of 30,000 kiloliters (KL). This bioethanol will serve as a raw material for biofuels.
“Pertamina supports the government’s mission to build energy self-sufficiency in Indonesia. Utilizing domestic energy resources is Pertamina’s initiative to achieve this mission. Bioethanol raw materials are not only from sugarcane but also from sorghum, corn, and other sources. Pertamina is actively researching to diversify bioethanol raw materials,” John said.
Similarly, Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), Fadjar Djoko Santoso, emphasized that, as an SOE, Pertamina not only serves the nation’s energy needs across the archipelago but is also committed to developing clean energy for a sustainable future. One such initiative is bioethanol, which is projected to be a promising energy source, leveraging Indonesia’s abundant plant-based resources.
“Bioethanol is produced from organic materials, offering immense potential for a cleaner and more sustainable energy future,” Fadjar stated.
Pertamina NRE’s other green energy portfolio includes geothermal energy managed by its subsidiary, PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), with a current installed capacity of 672 megawatts (MW), and solar energy with an installed capacity of over 50 MW. Pertamina NRE is also developing low-carbon hydrogen in locations such as Lahendong, North Sulawesi, and South Sumatra.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina’s business lines and operations.
