Jakarta, May 21, 2024 - PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), a subsidiary of Pertamina's Upstream Sub-holding, is actively participating in the largest international water forum, the 2024 World Water Forum (WWF), held in Bali from May 18-25, 2024.
Arya Dwi Paramita, the Corporate Secretary of PHE, explained that PHE's contribution to this event is directly reflected in the company's performance through various programs related to pertinent issues.
"PHE enthusiastically supports and responds to this international forum. The vision and mission of WWF 2024 align with PHE's ongoing efforts to support the global preservation of natural resources," said Arya.
Following this, PHE has developed several programs in exploration and production, including decommissioning using the rig-to-reef method. PHE also runs a produced water management program, reinjecting it into reservoirs after processing according to established standards.
Regarding Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL), PHE contributes by utilizing wetland technology as a nature-based solution to minimize environmental impact, enhance biodiversity, and absorb carbon.
PHE is also involved in riparian planning to reduce pollution from domestic waste and transform development areas into centers for education and environmental conservation through the ekoriparian program.
Ekoriparian is a riverbank utilization, initially used as waste disposal sites by building pollution control facilities tailored to existing sources of pollution. PHE has collaborated with universities, including Universitas Muhammadiyah, Riau Campus (UMRI), Pekanbaru Riau, and Universitas Lancang Kuning (UNILAK), Pekanbaru Riau.
"In contributing to sustainability programs, PHE has received recognition from stakeholders in Indonesia. Among these, PHE has achieved the 202 Community Involvement & Development (CID) Award with 596 CID program implementations, 634 empowered villages as beneficiaries of CID programs, 872,496 tons of CO2 eq/year emission reductions, and awards from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry including 12 Gold PROPER and 19 Green PROPER," added Arya.
PHE has also achieved an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) rating of 21.5, or medium risk, from the international rating agency Sustainalytics, placing PHE sixth among 308 global oil and gas producers.
Throughout 2023, PHE implemented 14 programs related to clean water access for communities in its working areas, from providing wells to building pipeline networks for communities, including remote and indigenous communities. It has also utilized renewable energy to educate about clean energy and emission reduction. PHE has 34 programs to reduce clean water intake and consumption in its operational and production environments, documented in the company's ESG program.
PHE's programs support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Goal 3, "Good Health and Well-being," Goal 6, "Clean Water and Sanitation," Goal 7, "Affordable and Clean Energy," and Goal 13, "Climate Action." Therefore, this international event is expected to encourage PHE and stakeholders to collaborate on finding solutions to global water issues.
In compliance with government regulations, PHE, through its subsidiaries, has rehabilitated Watershed (DAS) areas by planting various forest species over approximately 990 hectares, handed over to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, located in South Sumatra and East Kalimantan, from 2020 to 2023. This watershed rehabilitation fulfills obligations under the Forest Area Borrow-Use Permit held by the company, and PHE continues planting efforts to date.
The 2024 WWF is also expected to be a momentum to ensure the world moves hand in hand in preserving water resources for human life.
Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), Fadjar Djoko Santoso, added that Pertamina Group supports the government's target to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2060 or sooner. These programs span all its business lines, including the upstream sub-holding, which plays a significant role in maintaining energy sovereignty.
"Energy transition and decarbonization initiatives continue across all business lines to ensure future energy sustainability," said Fadjar.
PHE will continue to invest in the management of upstream oil and gas operations and businesses following ESG principles. PHE has been listed as the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) member since June 2022. PHE is committed to the UNGC's Ten Universal Principles in its strategy and operations as part of its ESG implementation. Supporting governance aspects, PHE is also committed to Zero Tolerance for Bribery by ensuring fraud prevention and maintaining a bribery-free company, including implementing the ISO 37001:2016 Anti-Bribery Management System (SMAP).
PHE continues to develop prudent and excellent operational management domestically and internationally to achieve its vision of becoming a world-class oil and gas company that is environmentally friendly, socially responsible, and governed well.
