Supporting SDGs Point 15, Pertamina Conducts Flora and Fauna Conservation Through Biodiversity Programs

Jakarta, June 23, 2021 - PT Pertamina (Persero) conducts Flora & Fauna Conservation through the Biodiversity Program as risk mitigation for biodiversity. It is Pertamina's commitment to minimizing the impact of operating activities.

Through this program, as many as 700,000 faunas from 261 species have been conserved. It includes birds, elephants, bats, butterflies, monkeys, civets, turtles, deer, and peacocks. A total of 50 programs have been deployed to conserve these faunas.

One of the programs carried out by Pertamina in conserving fauna is the Rehabilitation and Release of the Kamojang Eagle. This program is implemented through synergy with PGE Area Kamojang, BBKSDA West Java, and Raptor Indonesia.

This innovation from the Elang Kamojang program reduces emissions and waste such as carbon footprint, waste, and fuel emissions. This program also leads to a Kamojang Eagle Conservation Center Virtual Tour. It is visited by up to 235 people/day and can be accessed anywhere and anytime via the http://pge.pertamina page. com/CsrConservationElangKamojang/index.htm.

Another program is the Sulawesi Makaka Primate Rehabilitation Center, where the Yaki primate is rescued from being kept as pets through a rehabilitation process and then released into the wild to increase the natural population. Medical Check-Up is also carried out to minimize the risk of Zoonoses.

"With this program, people's interest in hunting and maintaining or even consuming yaki is reduced. This program also increases public awareness of yaki conservation," said Acting SVP Corporate Communications & Investor Relations of Pertamina, Fajriyah Usman.

In addition to fauna, Pertamina also conserves flora as many as 628,065 plants from 28 species, including mangroves and orchids. A total of 261 flora conservation programs have been implemented around the country.

Two of the flagship flora conservation programs are the Pertamina Educational Park at the Bogor Botanical Gardens and the Self-Sufficiency Program with Coffee. In the Bogor Botanical Gardens, there is a conservation garden of various plants from Pertamina's preservation. Each plant is given a QR Code to make it easier for visitors to get information about these plants. Pertamina is also trying to reduce carbon emissions by assisting in the form of electric buses.

Meanwhile, the Self-Sufficiency Program with Coffee is the cultivation of Puntang Coffee and saving the Javan Gibbon. Through Pertamina EP Subang Field, Javan gibbon conservation is carried out by empowering people to grow coffee. The coffee grown is Puntang Coffee which has the advantage of aroma, sweetness, and taste. This planting supports the environmental campaign, specifically the "Pay Coffee with Garbage" initiative through the Trash Coffee Shop, in addition to conserving the Javan gibbon.

"Puntang coffee planting is a form of conservation-based community empowerment. Besides being able to improve the welfare of the people living around Mount Puntang, it can also preserve the forest and the survival of the endangered Javan gibbon. So, once rowing, two or three islands are exceeded," said Fajriyah.

According to Fajriyah, conservation efforts through the Biodiversity Program are not only carried out to minimize the impact of operational activities. It is also part of the implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG-Environment, Social, and Governance) and meets the Sustainable Development Goals. It implements goals (SDGs) point 14, to conserve and use marine resources in a sustainable manner, and point 15, to protect, restore and support sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems and prevent the loss of biodiversity.
