Jakarta, August 13, 2024 – PT Pertamina (Persero) successfully recycled 7,066 uniforms collected voluntarily by 1,834 Pertamina Group officers. The total waste from Pertamina's uniform recycling program amounted to approximately 2.4 tons, which is calculated to have saved carbon emissions equivalent to 41.8 tons of CO2e.
Pertamina's recycling program, titled the “Uniform Recycling Program” #2Renew1, ran from May 2, 2024, to June 30, 2024. The program encouraged Pertamina officers to maximize their uniforms’ utilization so that old, unused uniforms could be voluntarily collected and recycled into more environmentally friendly uniform products. In line with the sustainable fashion program, the tagline "Give Your Uniform A Second Life" aims to promote a sustainable way of life, supporting the implementation of a circular economy and a tangible reduction in Scope 3 emissions.
Vice President of Corporate Communication at PT Pertamina (Persero), Fadjar Djoko Santoso, stated that the uniform recycling program for officers is one of Pertamina’s flagship Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives. Through sustainable fashion, Pertamina strives to raise awareness among officers about waste reduction, particularly from uniforms. The recycled uniforms were collected from the Pertamina Group, with 1,397 uniforms from Pertamina Holding’s officers and the rest from various subholdings and subsidiaries.
“With 2.4 tons of clothing waste processed, Pertamina officers have initiated a tangible movement toward reducing carbon emissions. We hope that Pertamina officers will adopt sustainability as a lifestyle. Thus, they can become sustainability agents and educate the public on these efforts,” said Fadjar.
The “Uniform Recycling Program” can eliminate potential carbon emissions by up to 41.8 tons of CO2e through textile waste processing from uniforms (circular textiles). This avoided emission is equivalent to preserving the land’s fertility of 14,281 m³. Uniform waste recycling also avoided up to 15 million liters of water usage. Additionally, this initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 12, which focuses on Responsible Consumption and Production.
“In the future, sustainable fashion is expected to become a lifestyle for Pertamina officers, allowing all officers to contribute to supporting the Net Zero Emission (NZE) target,” concluded Fadjar.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
