June 6, 2024 - Dindin Komarudin, a partner of Pertamina Hulu Energi Offshore North West Java (PHE ONWJ), received the 2024 Kalpataru award from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) for his dedication to environmental conservation.
Known as Abah Dindin, he won the 2024 Kalpataru Environmental Mentor category. It was presented by the Minister of Environment and Forestry, Dr. Ir Siti Nurbaya Bakar, M.Sc, at the Manggala Wanabakti Building, Jakarta, on Wednesday (5/6/2024).
In her speech, Siti Nurbaya reminded everyone that the Kalpataru Award, for 44 years since 1980, aims to motivate and encourage the pioneering efforts of award recipients in preserving the environment. Besides increasing the role of the community in environmental protection and management, Kalpataru also aims to highlight works proven effective in environment conservation and to socialize them to the broader community.
"This Kalpataru award opens opportunities for the development of innovation, creativity, and community initiatives as a form of motivation in environmental and forestry protection and management," said Siti Nurbaya in front of the audience. The event was also attended by former Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda, regional heads from across Indonesia, and senior officials from KLHK.
Siti Nurbaya advised the award recipients that Kalpataru is a mandate to maintain and enhance their pioneering efforts in environment and forestry conservation. "This award is also a sign that the government appreciates the efforts and dedication to the environment," she continued.
In 2024, the Kalpataru Award was given to ten individuals or groups from four categories. These include the Environmental Pioneer category, Environmental Servant category, Environmental Savior category, and Environmental Mentor category. The last category was awarded to Abah Dindin.
Originally from Bandung, Abah Dindin is an inspirational figure in environmental conservation. His efforts in guiding street children, marginalized groups, and people with disabilities in waste segregation, recycling creations, maggot cultivation, and other waste processing techniques are recognized nationally with the 2024 Kalpataru award in the Environmental Mentor category from KLHK.
This award is tangible proof of Dindin's commitment to environmental conservation and community empowerment. Since the 2000s, Dindin has been actively establishing the Kumala Foundation (Creative Independent Natural Enterprise) and the Kumala Waste Bank, which later developed into the Kumala Main Waste Bank, overseeing more than 34 Waste Bank Units (BSU) centered in the Koja, Tanjung Priok, and Cilincing areas of North Jakarta. Dindin's efforts not only improve the environment but also contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) points 8 and 9 on decent work and economic growth and infrastructure, as well as points 10 and 12 on reducing inequalities and promoting responsible consumption and production.
Dindin's contributions are not limited to Jakarta. He actively shares his knowledge and experience across various regions in Indonesia, mentoring and guiding street children and producing 25 former street children trainers to assist him in training. Abah Dindin has also mentored 12,768 people from all over Indonesia.
Dindin's dedication has not gone unnoticed by PHE ONWJ. As a fostered partner, PHE ONWJ is proud of Dindin's achievements and commitment to environmental conservation.
