World Water Monitoring Day: Dumai Refinery Commits to Sustainable Water Management

Dumai, September 20, 2024 – Water is one of the most essential resources for survival, including the industrial sector. PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) Dumai Unit, a company operating in the oil and gas industry that utilizes water to support its business activities, continues to monitor and manage clean water strictly and sustainably through various progressive efforts.

Area Manager of Communication, Relations, & CSR of Dumai Refinery, Agustiawan, stated that the company continues to manage water and domestic waste to achieve water efficiency and environmental management through various innovative solutions.

"Wise and consistent water management is continuously done to ensure water efficiency. We are committed to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement point 6, which focuses on clean water and proper sanitation. It is also our responsibility to protect the surrounding environment, which will impact the community," Agustiawan explained.

According to Agustiawan, water management efforts are implemented, internally and externally, through collaboration on community development programs under Social and Environmental Responsibility (SER) initiatives, also known as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Coinciding with the celebration of World Water Monitoring Day, observed on September 18 each year, Dumai Refinery has successfully implemented water efficiency efforts and reduced water pollution in its business practices following the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study.

Based on 2023 data, Dumai Refinery has implemented Water Efficiency and Wastewater Reduction programs to reduce the overall water use impact, eutrophication (water pollution caused by increased levels of minerals and nutrients), harmful chemicals affecting land organisms, freshwater ecosystems, marine ecosystems, and the toxicity effects on organisms, proven by the 85% integration of Water Efficiency programs and the 67% integration of Wastewater Reduction programs in the impact evaluation from the LCA study.

Through this study, the integrated Water Efficiency program successfully created a value of 1,262,626.02 m³ or 92.08% of the established target. Meanwhile, the integrated Wastewater Reduction program resulted in 39.35 tons or 84.16% of the target.

Similar to Agustiawan, the Vice President (VP) of the Sustainability Strategy of Pertamina, Suripno, shared during the 10th Water Forum Side Event-Executive Roundtable Dialogue on May 22, 2024, in Bali, that Pertamina's internal water sustainability efforts are implemented through behavioral and technological aspects. Externally, collaboration is fostered with communities and through CSR programs.

Additionally, Agustiawan mentioned that Dumai Refinery's efforts in water efficiency and pollution reduction were recognized in 2022 by the Dumai City Government through the Environmental Agency for its implementation of the MARKAS BULE program (Utilizing Sedimentation Discharge Water for Catfish Cultivation in Tanjung Palas Village).

Dumai Refinery's success in sustainable water monitoring and management for the sake of future generations does not stop here. Beyond its commitment to national energy resilience, the oil and gas company based in Dumai also contributes to environmental protection against climate change by implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in its business practices.

Separately, Vice President of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, added that energy efficiency, including water, is one of Pertamina’s sustainability efforts to preserve water availability and the ecosystem. Water measurement and management are documented regularly, reflecting Pertamina’s role as a responsible company toward the environment.

"Pertamina applies ESG principles in all business lines to promote sustainable business and ensure efficient operations with positive impacts," Fadjar said.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
