As a global energy company, our commitment to sustainability is by emphasizing the environmental, social and governance (ESG) aspects into the corporate strategy. Therefore, Pertamina sharpens its sustainability strategy which is formulated in the Ten Pertamina Sustainability Focuses, namely:
Our Sustainability Focus is also in line with global goals such as The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Pertamina’s main SDGs objectives include goals #1 No Poverty, #4 Quality Education, #5 Gender Equality, #7 Clean and Affordable Energy, #8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, #12 Responsible Consumption and Production, #13 Climate Action, #14 Life Below Water, #15 Life on Land, and #16 Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
Pertamina has demonstrated strong commitments and will continue its commitment to implement ESG strategy across its business and operations to support Indonesia’s ambitions in sustainability commitment, including in engaging a key role in leading Indonesia’s energy industry transition into the target energy mix and emission reduction.
Within the environmental aspect is aligned with Pertamina and Indonesia's sustainability focus on the Paris Agreement, in order to address climate change and reduce environmental footprint. Pertamina has succeeded in reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 6,38% in 2022 on a 2020 basis. Moving forward, Pertamina aims to further reduce GHG emissions comprehensively and is determined in reaching 30% by 2030. On top of that, New and Renewable Energy (NRE) development will be one of Pertamina’s key priorities to address the environmental issue and align ourselves to Nation’s Energy Mix by 2030. We aim to increase our total NRE capacity to 10.2 Gigawatt in 2026. Across its areas of operations, Pertamina has launched various initiatives in preservation of native flora and fauna across its areas of operations with protection and preservation of endemic animal and plant species – most are considered rare and/or critically endangered.
The social aspect in the sustainability focuses, Pertamina upholds and aims to strengthen our Health & Safety programs within our operations. We have achieved Lost Time Injury Rate (LTIR) of 0.02 and will continue to strive for zero incident. Pertamina has a mandate to contribute to the National energy resilience and provides nationwide access to energy through several of its ongoing flagship initiatives such as the One-Price Fuel Policy and One Village One Outlet (OVOO) program. Furthermore, Pertamina has its eyes set on the building upon its existing empowerment program, which will pave the way for people with disabilities to join the company through recruitment program. Pertamina also led the way in promoting gender equality in the workplace. Two of our six Board of Directors are female and more than 17% of our management level are woman leaders. For the community engagement, Pertamina implements a holistic Corporate Social Responsibility Program for improving the society’s quality of life and wellbeing in term of education, health, environment, as well as the surrounding economy.
Regarding the Governance aspect, Pertamina has proven its commitment with the rising of our Good Corporate Governance (GCG) score and the launched of The New Pertamina Clean Charter in June 2020 as one of our efforts for the implementation of ISO 37001:2016 on the Anti-Bribery Management System which is also in line with the corporation AKHLAK values.
Pertamina’s Sustainability Commitment through the UN Global Compact
As part of its commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices, since August 2021 Pertamina has embedded the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact (UN Global Compact) into strategies and operations, and committed to respecting human and labour rights, safeguarding the environment, and working against corruption in all its forms.
Pertamina's Transparency Commitment through Engagement with EITI
Pertamina's commitment to continue strengthening governance practices is implemented through direct support for EITI. The EITI (Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative) is a global standard for the good governance of oil, gas and mineral resources. EITI seeks to address the key governance issues in the extractive sectors.
Since October 2022, Pertamina has become a Supporting Company of EITI with 21 global oil and gas companies as well as 43 global companies from other industries. Pertamina is also the first oil and gas company in Southeast Asia to support EITI. Pertamina commits to ensure compliance of all stipulated legal requirements, and upholds the highest standards of Good Corporate Governance practices, including accountability and transparency throughout the company's areas of operations.
