Pertamina realizes every operational activity to bring impacts on the original habitat and the ecosystem, thus endangering the lives of flora and fauna. Pertamina therefore commits to ensure the minimum impacts of the operations by conducting preventive actions, minimizing and mitigating risk to biodiversity during the business cycle, showing high responsibility in land use while planning and modifying design, construction and operational practices that ensure the protection of the endemic flora and fauna.
Main goal of the Pertamina’s policy on biodiversity protection is to protect the ecosystem near the business location of Pertamina, including life below water and on land. This is merely because some of the businesses of Pertamina are located near to highly preserved areas or areas that have rich biodiversity beyond the preserved area.
Among the action programs are to develop a conservation area as new habitat for fauna and flora that suffer from the impacts of its operations. Through end of 2019, Pertamina has managed a total of 96 conservation areas through the operational units and subsidiaries, in partnership with universities, independent institutions and the surrounding community.
The Company’s biodiversity protection programs are among which realized through protection of critically endangered fauna and extinct endemic flora. The determination of status of fauna and flora status refers to the Red List issued by IUCN. Through end of 2019, the Company has completed conservation to 42 fauna and 24 flora that are categorized as preserved as well as endemic species, they are:
