Pertamina’s commitment to support the Government in addressing the climate change issue together with the international society merely represents its awareness of supporting the achievement of 13th Goal of SDGs and awareness of minimizing risk of the climate change to both of operation and businesses of Pertamina.
Therefore, climate change is one of priority programs of Pertamina. Pertamina accordingly has designed a number of activities:
The activity implementation target is to help achieve Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction target set by the government at 29% (on own efforts) and up to 41% (with international assistance) by 2030. Controlling emission particularly greenhouse gasses is an eminent issue as implications of the climate change are becoming significant. Therefore, Pertamina has set focus on reducing greenhouse gasses with respect to National Action Plan for Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction (RAN-GRK) and other regulations.
Focus on emission control by Pertamina is to reduce greenhouse gasses through regulatory compliance approach, namely Presidential Decree No. 61 of 2011 about National Action Plan for Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction (RAN-GRK) with reduction target at 29% - 41% by 2030.
Pertamina alone is a leading sector in the effort of reducing the GHG emission. Accordingly Pertamina has set a Roadmap for GHG Emission Reduction for 2020 containing goals and plans toward a clean, low-GHG operation. Pertamina is targeting to be able to reduce the GHG emission in its operations by 6.48 million tons of CO2 from baseline year of 2010. Then, to ensure the effective implementation of the roadmap, Pertamina has included climate change into the Risk Intelligence Map (RIM).
Pertamina has taken initiative to control the GHG emission by Starting the inventory of the sources of emission with baseline year of 2010, calculating and reporting for greenhouse gas emission on periodical basis. Measuring GHG emissions Scope 1 only includes sources of GHG emissions that originate from direct energy use, including fuel consumption for operation vehicles and generator use, with the types of GHG emissions being carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and sodium oxide (N2O).
Measurement of GHG emissions scope 2 covers GHG emissions from energy consumption originating from outside the Company, including electricity. The Company has not measured Scope 3 GHG emissions from energy use by parties who are part of Pertamina’s supply chain and beyond the Company’s control.
Until the end of 2019, the Company continued the efforts to reduce GHG emissions from the production process (Scope 1). Efforts to reduce GHG emissions were carried out through energy efficiency, use of flare gas, fuel conversion, use of energy-efficient and low-emission equipment as well as optimization and modification of equipment. Some of the leading programs carried out in the context of reducing GHG emissions are:
